Way to test optispark and optical sensor?

I have a 94 Camaro LT1 A4 transmission, I'm pretty sure my optispark is shot....again, but before I bring it to a shop so they can have it for a month before they even figure out the problem....again, I was wondering if I could test the opti and the optical sensor myself?

I tested the ICM using the instructions at shbox.com, it said dc volts I should be getting 10 on terminal A and D, I got 11.19 volts on both, I figured that might be fine. On AC volts testing terminal B I should get between 1-4 volts, I got roughly around 2.8-4 but at one point it shot up to 8 volts. I know the voltage in my battery is low but I think I got some clear readings.

So is there a way to test the opti and sensor? I see everywhere problems with bad opti, but is there a way to test it? Is 8 AC volts to much, and or could my battery be giving me false readings?

I realized why I'm having a hard time testing the opti, the pigtail thats on top next to the TPS coming from the opti is missing, when I had my motor swap done back in May of 06 it looks like they took out that pigtail from both sides and just spliced the wires together with some heat shrink.

Any suggestions?

Shoeboxes site says...

If you have good voltage, switch the meter to ac scale and connect test leads to terminal "B" and to ground. Observe meter while cranking the engine. You should see between 1 and 4 volts ac (those are the pulses that trigger the coil to fire).

If you don't see the proper ac voltage the problem could be the optispark, the harness to the optispark, the PCM or any of the wiring in between. Visually inspect all the connections you can get to for poor contact or corrosion.

I also have read the only thing you disconnect is the connector to the ICM, not the opti. Those are the terminals you will be testing, they are labeled. Use the bolt to the right of the coil as the ground. Not sure how well that works but I found that on another forum lol...

Looks like you got most of this info down. Sorry Im not sure if the higher AC would be proper. Sounds kinda off to me. What is your camaro doing? Missfire?
