whats my problem??

I have an 1997 audi a4 1.8 t with an aftermarket hks intake...this happened for the first time to me ysterday night...it was -22 with the windchill no idea if that has anything to do with it anyways here goes...when i started the car after it sitting for about 9 hours the engine wouldnt turn over so after trying again when i press on the gas pedal the engine starts goin but when i stop accelerating the car just dies..all my accessories stay on..so today i started it and the same thing except this time i feathered the gas at about 2000 rpm for bout 10 mins (smelt really rich)and let it go down eventually to around 1 and the car didnt die on me ran fine except the idle at times would drop to bout 5-600 rpm but then would bring itself back up to round 900.. drives fine and doesnt die...i shut er off and restarted it again without feathering the gas and no problems(so its only a problem when my cars sitting for a while) anyone have any suggestions what it could be...perhaps a idle or mass air flow sensor? fuel pump? i dont think its my alternator any suggestions would be appreciated thanks

You don;t have an engine light because of this? do you service you car often? The mass air flow is a sensor that is usually cleaned frequently and the computer relies on this sensor as a key role in fuel distribution. Do not clean the sensor with it hot otherwise you could ruin the sensor. Have the car completely off and the key out of the ignition. If the key is in the on position and you attempt to clean the sensor you could destory it. What you have described sounds like maf related problems. Try that first and see what the outcome is!

sounds like maf

Yep, it does sound like MAF. Probably need a new one - I would Vag the car though. Anyhow, my main question would be to see if the actual filter gets wet often. You may be sucking in water. I guess you removed the entire air box and snorkel. I have a intake on mine as well...but I made mine so that Im using the snorkel and the bottom half of my air box still. With my set up this way, I get no water coming in. A few of my friends with A4s have had tthis same problem with aftermarket intakes HKS especially. Better intake choice would probably be homemade or Evoms intake.

Anyhow, I hope that helps

BTW, did you get a cat? If not, I have an extra one that Im looking to sell (I bought a high flow cat) LMK!!!
