361/476 whp EK

All About The EK Words: TunerZine Staff | Pics: Luke Munnell
There’s many different ways to build a car. Some people with deep pockets are able to toss thousands of dollars into their cars overnight while others prefer to take a slow and meticulous route, ensuring each piece of the process is done flawlessly. Jeff Blumenfeld took the latter route and the result of his project shows. With over 450whp at 22psi of boost, Blumenfeld’s EK is the real deal inside and out. From the engine bay to the interior, this car was built with no panel overlooked.

Starting with a B16A motor, Blumenfeld had the block overhauled with 81.5mm AEBS sleeves, JE pistons and Carrillo rods as a Full Race T3/T67 turbo kit was about to find its way onto the motor. The B16A head got a fair treatment towards flowing above and beyond factory with a port and polish and all new valvetrain courtesy of REV and the B16’s brethren, the B18C5. Additional fuel is supplied to the massive turbo setup through Precision 1000cc injectors, AEM fuel pressure regulator and STR fuel rail. Controlling the boost level and tuning the car is a series of electronics from Blitz, DEFi and Innovative. Currently tuned by Jeff Evans to 476whp and 328wtq @ 22psi, Blumenfeld’s EK is no joke on the street. Even at a conservative 14psi, the B16 peaks out at 361whp and 249wtq.

Getting the power to the ground has been made easier with Omnipower’s Drag Suspension. Working alongside the coilovers, Omnipower’s lower control arms, Suspension Techniques’ sway bars and ASR’s rear subframe plate reinforces and accentuates the suspension components. Fastening down the entire chassis is a chromoly roll cage fabricated by Henry F of HFR Fabrication. While the car roams the streets, a set of 16x7-inch 5Zigen FN01RC wheels are seen on all four corners. Wrapped with Kumho VX7000 tires, plenty of rubber gets laid down on the tarmac in the Maryland area. For drag however, Blumenfeld has a whole new solution in getting traction. A set of 13x7.5-inch Lenso VPD drag wheels with 24.5x9/13 Mickey Thompson slicks are ready to go.

The outside of this EK means business as well, keeping a nice clean, conservative feel to it. Replacing the front end with the more recent 00 front end, the entire car was repainted Electron Blue Pearl. Blumenfeld decided to go two tone however, giving the roof a treatment of Flamenco Black Pearl paint, giving this EK two out of the three 99-00 Si paint colors. Carbon fiber goodies come in the shape of a VIS wing, Composite Fab hood and Seibon front lip. All the way from Japan are Civic Type-R mirrors, rear lip and rear taillights.

Popping our heads into the interior, Sparco’s gotten its fair share of play in this bad boy EK. On the driver side is a Torino seat while the passenger side sports a Sprint counterpart. The stock steering wheel has been tossed out for a Mugelo style from Sparco. More carbon has found its way into the interior with door inserts from Composites Fab. Shifting through the gears has been made slightly more pleasant with the Skunk2 anniversary shift knob.

Blumenfeld’s EK is definitely more go than show, but its aesthetics is clean enough to be worthy of any publication. What lurks underneath the hood is what shines though, with well over 450whp being produced out of a B16. We didn’t get a chance to explain everything involved in the car, but make sure you check out his spec sheet and the awesome photos by Luke Munnell to really get a good impression of Blumenfeld’s hard work.
