Generally you never want to buy a 1st or 2nd year production car... 92 was pretty much the first year of the E36... so if anything I would suggest a 94 and up....

I drive a 1990 535i myself, and the key to these cars is how they have been maintained. That being said, when I decided to get into the bimmer scene I was told by some coworkers (all with bimmers) to go for a 5 series as they are made so much more solid over the 3 series, so far (1 year) the thing has been an incredibly reliable tank! I think there is good and bad in every year/make....getting that old tho, I think it is all in how it was treated/maintained. I ended up having to replace everything rubber (motor/tranny mounts/driveline hanger/guibo/thrust arms/steering links) due to what seems to be was the age but it rides better than my 99 Grand Prix that i had prior to this...

Tomek6 10-29-2005 10:19 PM

They're slow too and if ur gonna go with a bimmer get a coupe.

shmike 11-07-2005 05:57 PM

for the love of got, just no 318's!!!!!

B6T 11-08-2005 01:59 AM

Save a few extra ducats and get yourself a 328i coupe. They have a 2.8L engine instead of a 2.5L, and although the 2.8L only makes 1 more hp then the 2.5L, it makes something like 20 ft. lbs. more torque.

sleepy GSR 11-14-2005 11:16 PM

i had a 92' and it broke constantly, if you are looking at one, make sure you have a mechanic you trust check it thoroghly. its been 2 years since i got rid of my piece of and i'm still bitter. plus what NOTORIOUS VR said about first and second year cars is something you should consider as well. BTW the 328s only came out in 96' and it would be way out of the price range of a 92-94 325I. don't believe what they say about bimmers, that they would last forever, cause they REALLYYY don't. i guess it depends on the car and the driver as well but like i said i'm still very bitter.

sleepy GSR 11-14-2005 11:17 PM

oh, and dude is right, please don't go with a 318.

T.Dot_E30 11-15-2005 12:52 AM

The 92s had rear sub-frame problems, it was fixed in years after that.

Older BMWs aren't for ppl who would run to a mechanic to change a fuse or a bulb/brakes, if u can fix things yourself, it becomes alot less costly to own one.

thats true with almost any car, my buddy has a 94 bimmer and he keeps it maintained really well, does most stuff himself, only had problems with his fuel pump and power windows

why is that? is it just because it is very slow or it has alot of problems? :dunno:

Tomek6 01-17-2006 12:34 PM

Slow. and if anything breaks it is expensive. So id rather put money into an expensive fast car rather than an expensive slow car. There is nothing special about the 1.8 litre in the BMW. Doesn't have vanos or anything. Just a regular 1.8.

shuller1458 01-17-2006 10:12 PM

Agree ^, but what if he wants economy and doesn't want to spend alot on the BMW. Because the bigger the engine BMw comes, the more expensive initial purchase gets.

Tomek6 01-17-2006 11:50 PM

Yeah. But for a '92 it's not that much more to get a 325 or 328. Plus economy depends on how hard u stress the motor. Those bmws aren't exactly light. A 1.8 in a car like that struggles thus poor economy.

I know a few ppl that have one and they've never had any problems with it. But I don't know anything about the car itself so... Did you try any BMW forums? MaxBimmer is a pretty big forum/club and they're toronto based.

Thats the most illiterate sentence I've seen in months.

mdvrep 05-31-2007 04:12 PM

I have a 92 535i that I bought about 6 months ago and so far no problems at all except that the driver side window recently came off the track which I still need to fix.

heyyo302 07-17-2008 12:51 PM

You may face lot of problem as I found in the discussions from many sites if you cannot buy this series checking with more expert mechanic. You can visit BMW site before buy. May I help you posting a link here ? This is not sale just how to get information.
