Drove an 850i Today
 

A guy at work let me drive his 92 BMW 850i today and it felt incredible.

I used to lust over this car back in the late 80s when Bruce Willis drove it in Moonlighting <- great show BTW

I sat down and put key in and the steering wheel came down, sweet! 92 and 6 spd, awesome!

Engaging reverse was very uncomfortable for someone not used to the car. I kept putting it in rev instead of 1st, dumbass.

I've driven V8s before but this V12 was something else. I looked up specs on it and it doesn't seem to be that fast but man did it pull. I've driven a 330 before and this thing felt similar, smoothe linear acceleration but a HELL of alot more of it. The car did feel VERY heavy though when tossing it around.

This is the 850i (pretty damn sure thats what the badging was) not even the 850CSi. So <300Hp and >4200lbs which isn't a good power to weight ratio at all. He must have something done to it cause he is a huge car guy and this thing felt off. He says he hasn't done anything yet though.

I got in my Z after and it felt WAY different, very slow actually. Brought back my urge for more power. But when cranking the wheel the Z instantly responded unlike the 850 :smile: . I was surprised how underpowered my car felt since they have similar performance specs with the edge going to the 350Z as a matter of fact. This is strictly magazine racing so who really knows.

Anyways, It felt great and now I have about 15Km under my belt in a V12:headbang: I guess it was a good day at work.

I don't work with nor see the guy anymore so not really possible. He told me after I drove it that it did have some mod chip cause I was stunned with how powerful it felt.

Very nice! They're awesome cars for sure... a timeless classic IMO... it looks pretty neat even in todays world of weird shaped cars.

The 8 series was one of the nicest GT cars of it's day, and VERY advanced... which is why it had so many issues. It's nice to drive one but not that nice to own one (they say anyways).

Either way you can't go wrong with a V12 and a 6spd (rare)... the CSi is a completely different beast altogether for sure!

Its a nice tourer for sure, but you seem a bit overboard in your description of how fast it felt. Even the CSI's were only 14 second cars, which granted, wasnt bad for early 90's. I doubt highly that this guy's 850 was modded to the level of a CSI.

Nice cars but not very fast. Parts cost for them is killer and they have many issues. Keep in mind that this was a $100 000 car.
