Help With Car alarm!
 

Hey guys,

im lookin to get a alarm for my 71 since it will be my daily driver soon and it doesnt have a garage....since i know nothing about audio and alarms, that is why i turn to you guys...i took a trip to future shop and best buy, and all the car alarms in the 100-200 dollar range say that if it gets windy out or a loud car drives by it will set it off....does anybody have experience with alarms like these? i dont want my car in the driveway at night setting off the alarm cuz its windy or someone drives by in their fartcanned exhaust....the other alarms like in the 200-300 dollar range dont mention anything like this at all....Thats why i need you guys to tell me if these cheaper alarms really are that sensitive, and if so what should i get and from where? i dont really want to spend more than 150-200 bucks on one, and ill be installing it myself, so if you guys have any suggestions, please drop em:smile:

Most alarms nowadays whether they are cheap or not have an adjustable shock sensor. All they have to do to make it less sensitive is lower the sensitivity. Some alarms allow you to do it through the remote (my old ungo was like this) and others there is a know on the shock sensor (my current compustar is like this). If it is going off because its too windy then lower the setting or disable the shock sensor for that day (some alarms allow you to disable the shock sensor by using the remote, this comes in handy if its super windy, or u park where there is construction close by).

lowering the sensitivity sounds like a good route....i had thought there would probably be an option like that on them, but im not too sure if the lower model ones have that as well....also, once the sensitivity is lowered, if someone tries to break in wil it still go off? thanks so far guys....anybody else feel free to drop their input

Yep, if you lower it to much then it wont go off when someone breaks in if the shock sensor is the only thing that monitors the car, usually most alarms also can see if a door/trunk/hood (monitored points of entry) is opened and will set off the alarm then as well

yea ^^ mines pretty sesnitive.. and i wish it was lowered... because sometimes it goes off randomly.. but yea its pretty good.. i dont have a latch on my hood, so basically when u apply pressure or anything on the hood, the alrm goes off

so i went to the local bestbuy the other day to talk to the guy there...he basically told me that the whole thing about the alarm going off from wind or a loud car is bullshit...his reason for this was that the alarm has a shock sensor, which only sense shock to the car (i.e. someone touching it)...he said that the sensitivity can be adjusted less so that the car will only beep when someone tries to open your cars door....his explanation sounded right, but i still dont understand why the alarms described said that they could be set off from wind/ loud noise and he says they dont; he says for that to happen, it needs a motion sensor, which isnt included....but why would it say that in the description? is this guy just pulling my leg?

I love Best Buy but normally the guy who sells the alarms sells subs and amps. I dont think that they really know everything. I would ask the guys in the bay (who install it) maybe they can help ya out.

he told me that he does work in the bay as well....the first thing i asked him is if he has experience installing the alarms, and he said yes....so i am assuming he does since thats what he told me

You know what, take a few minutes and drive over to Selective Sound or call Davis.

Those guys do amazing work.

AS for the cost of an alarm, get something that is two way and will alert you on your keychain fob.

I know of a member from here who had his teg jacked with a pager alarm. He heard it go off and didn't bother to look. Following morning the teg was gone.

Not sure he would publicly admit to that though. LOL
