Is it illegal to spray paint outside?
 

I was reading on honda-tech, someone said its illegal to spray paint (With a gun, not a rattle can) outside. Ive never heard this before, i cant see why thatd be true as its not really any different than doing it inside... im talking about a cheap hplv gun and a compressor, not anything huge, laying drop sheets and everything.

So anyone know? My neighbors are the type to call the cops for something like that.

Well I dont know if it is illegal or not. Could be a bi law in your area though.
I do know that if I was one of your neighbours and my car was parked out side, I would be very pissed off if I came out to find over spray all over my car because you were spraying something. Paint from a spray gun or spray can will travel when it gets airborne.
Some times you got to think of your neighbours and how you would feel if you saw one of them doing that when your ride is parked out side.

Yeah, i know, i would be pissed too, thats why i was planning on doing it in the back (stones back there, my roommate has a car parked on them right now, waiting to be sold), and id throw a cloth up on the wall, as well as under the car to make sure im not spraying all over the place.

If i had a garage id be doing it in there, but i dont, so ive got to do it outside. Im definately going to be careful if i do it though, because i dont want paint everywhere and i dont want to ruin anyone elses stuff either, because i cant afford to replace it for them :smilie_da

Just want to know its illegal. I dont want the cops to show up, i hear its like a 2000 dollar fine (if it really is illegal here, they might have been talking about somewhere in the US?). It seems weird though because dont some house painters use spray?

Automotive paints contain VOC's (volitile organic compounds) and these elements can/are poisonus and deadly to humans, they can make you really sick or worse kill. Auto body places are mandated by some dort of law - that they must use a spray booth to try to catch any "mist" that does not go onto the vehicle, they may even be mandated to be downdraft or updraft ony [but dont quote me on that as I've been out of that sector for many years now] and the filters catch all the mist that leaves the booth.

Yes HVLP and even LPLV guns/kits place most of the paint on the car but some will allways escape. Painting a car outside is not prefered because all sorts of crap will land on the paint while yer painting it and while its drying/cureing and make a fukken mess of . If yer spraying primer only, then you could try to sand that out and reapply some more primer, but I highly recommend against spraying finnishing coats outside. A garage is better but you should also have a fresh air supply for yourself or suffer any future health consequences. Even in pro paint boots you get shite landing on the paint.

The other thing is lighting, you do not want to paint in direct sunlight (for various reasons), and if yer in a garage I recomend getting a bunch of lighting put up

Anything other than a booth thats well lit and yer looking at a sloppy paint job, one you'll prolly hate, then you'll need to sand that shite off and start again. Unless you dont care about the paint quality

If the EPA does find out about it, you could be in for a hefty big azz fine, I know dumping paint (any kind) carrys something like a 5million dollar fine (usually reserved for corps).

I wouldnt chance it for so many reasons.

Get a buddy's garage and hope for the best, or you might be able to find a place that'll rent you a booth, but for a couple bux more a pro could paint it for you and take the health risks and paint finsih responsibilities
