painting Dashboards?

ok i know how to paint a car but i have no clue what to do on a dashboard do you sand it? what kind of paint ? can u use a bondo? oh and do i use a clear for the last touch?

Are you talking about your trim or the whole dash? Cus if you do the trim you dont have to sand but all you can use is some primer and spray paint.. Then just clear it.. Thats what I did with mine.. But I didnt paint the whole dash, you would have to talk to Brian or Grant about that.. One thing I know is that you probably shouldnt use glossy paint or clear on the top of the dash because of the reflection in the window and or the sun with reflect ALOT more..

lol I hear that all the time to people who bring me their dash pieces to paint...

" I can paint my car but how do you do this so well..."

What peices are you doing? or the whole dash? the paint will be different if youre doing the plastic pieces or not. Id recommend even if you are doing just the plastic dash peices around like the radio and gauges etc...to sand it. it looks much better without the texture. and use sandable primer and sand it many times. wet sanding is by far the ultimate best. I do this for a side job so Im just speaking from what ive found to work the best, thats all.

I have pics of mine (not finished) and my friends GP's interior i did. if you want to see.

even if you don't want it perfectly smooth, I'd recommend sanding it. I sanded mine very lightly, primed, putt he color, then cleared it. I din'y do the whole dash, only pieces, but i looked very good and has lasted a long time. I plan on redoing it this spring, to a different color, though, not because its messing up.

If you are doing the entire dash piece, I would take it out and plan on spendin a lot of time with it if you want it to look good.

I would sand it first then use a couple coats of filler primer, sanding between coats to get it perfectly smooth. Then use your color and clear on top of that. But keep in mind that its going to have a TERRIBLE reflection on the windshield when its sunny out. (I don't even use Armor All or other cleaner on my dash since I hate the reflection.)

If you're looking to change the color of the dash why not dye it? The dye will actually soak in, I've had great results with my Beretta. I changed it from maroon to black. There's a couple pics if you click the link in my sig.

I didn't know your dash was dyed, it looks great and you'll never know it was that ugly red before.
What kind of dye did you use and where would I buy it? I really want to change the color of all my plastic peices to black instead of the grey it is now.

This intreges me! Did you dye everthing (ie. carpet, seats, console, etc...)? Or was it just the dash, and replced the other parts?
