01' V6 Auto Gear Swap

I have a stock 2001 Firebird V6 Automatic and I want to do a gear swap. I don't know what gears I have, I think they're 3.08. I'm thinking about getting either 3.42 or 3.73 ... Can I go bigger without swapping the whole rear end? Either way, where can I get it and how much will it cost?

I recently went to the track and got a 10.03 1/8 mile. Is that a fair time for my vehicle? I beat an SS Silverado with cold air and catback exhaust. He got a 9.8, but I won because of my reaction time.

Will the gear swap help my 1/8 mile time much?

If its just a base model V6 probably just 3.08s...you can tell by a door code do u have Y87? Or better yet do both rear tires spin when u attempt a burn out? If not you have open-diff so you should get LSDs and 3.73s would be perfect but you can get 4.10s but it will hurt ur top end some and gas mileage. Cost depends on where u have them installed and how....then u gota get ur car tuned as well.

i would get 3.42's...honestly I dont think you would be happy with 3.73's. I went to 3.73's and wasn't dissapointed with low end but i lost all top end and gas mileage dropped a lot. 3.42 would be a good all around gear and swapping the whole rear end is probably easier unless you know what your doin with the gears.

i would go with 3.42's with a 6 i think that 3.73's are a little high but still doable but 4.10's are too steep i think the low end improvement wouldnt be worth what u lost in top end and i dont even know how it would hurt ur gas milage

Its been proven many times that 4.10s dont KILL ur gas mileage....of course it wont be as good as 3.08s but it doesnt kill it as u think. Also, You only improve with them this top end loss is in the higher 90s area and above its been proven. keep a stock v6 with 3.08s and run it in the 1/4 then again with 4.10s only added and you will have a great improvement which is by far worth it.

can I fit a 3.42 or 3.73 gear in my diff?

also, can i upgrade my diff to a LSD?

Actually it's higher than that, how do I know? I have them :) With the cam and the 4.10s I still get around 27 mpg all city so :nana: at the haters. 4.10s work with our cars well because our motor makes very good power in the top end (high rpms) and you'll be there often with 4.10s.

hey 99v6cam, how did you do your swap? did you get a whole new rear end or just buy a bigger gear?

SOMBirdV6 06-12-2006 02:32 AM

He just bought a bigger gear.

http://www.thunderracing.com <---but a set of gears there and a LSD and get them installed and ur car tuned after. Can cost some cash but well worth it in the end.

yea i didnt really know if it hurt gas milage or not cause ive heard both and i dont have them so i cant tell

okay, so in order to get 3.73 gears, all i need is a gear? what do i need to do to convert it, then, to a LSD?

MyFirstCamaro 06-14-2006 08:14 PM

bhpbo keep asking these questions because this was something i was really looking into doing now
