3.8L Exhaust Questions

I have a 01 camaro, 3.8l auto. i want to make it louder, all ive done is since my 02 sensor isnt working i took it out. its louder alright but it sounds like shyt lol. I wana make it sound more aggressive, who whouldnt? I was wondering if it were possiable to remove cat. and muff. and just run str8 pipe? Ive supposedly herd and saw it done. a guy told me he got his to sound good by running str8 pipe, no cat and no muff. i just didnt knw if i could do it too. If not, wat about Flowmaster...or Borla, or maybe magnaflow or summin? Wat yall think? Thankz

You can never get the sound of a v8 out of a v6. By spending alot of money and increasing your overall horsepower and compression you will get a deeper sound, but still nothing compared to the sound of a stock v8 with exhaust. The best way to make your v6 sound 'better' is to get a set of headers, do a cat delete or replace it with an aftermarket cat, and run the exhaust of your choice.

Chances are you'll need an o2 simulator to make it work without throwing a code. You can run straight pipes, but it will be illegal, very illegal. No cat and no muffler sounds like *** on a 3.8, trust me. I'd either go with Borla or the TSP Rumbler and a highflow carsound cat with a set of headers, that combo will make it sound a ton better.

ok thanks

yeah just a straight pipe will sound like dick on a v6. I dont know how you made your exhaust sound better by taking out your 02, but whatever. I agree with what phate said about about headers and catback.

If i get headers, wat kinda of price range am i looking at? And how much work is involved in installing them?

paarman97maro 09-15-2007 02:22 PM

depending on if you get ceramic coated or just painted.. painted are around 200 ceramic coated are like 340ish I believe. Theres quite a bit of work to install them, getting the old stuff off is the most work.

ok i have an additional questionwhat diamiter pipe would you recomend? iv hurd that 3 inch dont sound great on 6is maybe 2.5???

theres a long write up on this on ftv6.com.

I looked into it before getting mine. The bigger diameter, the better sound youll get, but less low end torque (not that it really matters for me). It adds to the bass sound of the exhaust with the bigger diameter. The reason I got 3" is because not a lot of v6s go with a v8 exhaust, they go with the 2.5 Which this will get better torque, may sound a bit different.

I just wanted mine to sound good, I dont care so much about the power.

Heres Magnaflows insight on it:

Me and Paar are the exact opposite here lol.

If I had twice as much money to spend, then yeah I would care, but Im waiting until I get my Z or a vette.

I dont blame ya. But I know im not gonna have the money for either of those endevors anytime soon, so why not just invest in what i've got? It sure is fun to drive regardless :D

Ya, i care about power but i want a good sound too. actually i just want a better sound than the quite factory exhaust. As for now all ive done is Cut off my muffler before my rear end. lol Ok idle sound but crapy and hi RPM's lol!

Then just do what we recommended earlier, and you'll have the best sound you can get out a 3.8 without motor mods.

paarman97maro 09-18-2007 11:01 PM

yeah basically everything will sound crappy in high rpms... not until you mod the engine.
