350 Engine swap in a 89 rs

Hey everyone, I just got a rebuilt 350 carberated 81-85 style I think. I paid only 300 bucks for it from my friend. I was wondering if anyone knows what it will take to get it to pass emission testing. Can I use the smog stuff from my 305? Please help. Matt http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2142402 . no updated pics of engine yet though. :feedback:

to pass smog you'll need the intake and injection off the 305, and all teh emmissions stuff from it.Most of it should work with no trouble since the part numbers are usually the same for 5.7 and 5.0. The carb won't pass (at least it's not supposed to) since carb was not an option on your car

you don't think a well tuned carb will pass? Idk, you would know better than i, but you can get a carb to run pretty good if its right. and they don't even look under the hood or plug it into a computer. they didn't even say anything about my pipes when i went on tuesday.

the law says if it was not available from teh factory it is illegal. The factories went to injhection for 2 reasons fuel economy, and emissions (a factory carb even tuned correctly by machine does not run as clean as injection, and few people tune one correctly)

Thanks for all the help and fast replies. I really appreciate it. I will see what I can find out about having a carb though. Matt

Will I have to use my old distributor also?

archemedes 12-04-2005 04:33 PM

I think so, it has a little different advance I believe to work with teh injection (I am not positive, you can check part numbers and see if tehy match)

Even though my car is an 89 the intake should work on the older engine? 305 has centerbolt valve covers, 350 doesn't does this matter?

Dna383 12-04-2005 08:49 PM

that's a good question i don't know. i have an 85 iroc with a swaped in (80-85) 350 4 bolt main and it has the 305 tpi system on it. but they didn't go to centerbolt until 87 so i don't know. i believe it should work because i don't think anything was changed with the bolt patterns and what not until the vortec heads. but definately check it out

Thanks again

intake should bolt on no problem, the vortec design came out later, the center bolt covers were to stop the leaks that are so common with teh regular type from over tightening

blue89vert 12-05-2005 05:27 PM

the power steering pump and a/c pump should bolt back up to the 350 no prob also right?

archemedes 12-06-2005 09:05 PM

same parts (they are the same as most gm's)

Dna383 12-13-2005 11:44 PM

you may have problems with headers and the accesories tho, some of the brackets use the exhaust port bolts

Dna383 12-13-2005 11:46 PM

nevermind, no headers, smog my bad
