350 troubles
Hey everyone. I have a chevy truck with a 350 in it that was stored inside all winter. Now that Ive brought it out its been making a clicking sound around every 20 seconds at idle. The higher the engine revs the more it clicks. It sounds like its coming from the back of the motor near where it attatches to the tranny. Ive checked for anything rubbing and it doesnt seem like anything is. Also when i turn the engine over without starting it at a certain point it makes a clinging sound almost like a nut or bolt is falling onto metal.
Any help would be greatly appreciated because this one is really stumping me. Thanks alot! |
It could be tonnes of things....Header exhaust leak, could be valvetrain related could be a broken spring or if it sounds like metal to metal clicking it may be the piston in one cylinder is hitting the valve.

pull the valve covers off, check for valve problems. i think its that , or wrist pin is broken...

Could also be either the torque converter bolt(s), this happened to my buddies T/A. Or a connecting rod end cap bolt, this happened to my 80 Cutlass. If it is an end cap bolt you will know soon as it will come out the side of the block. I speak from experience on this one LOL.

I would take off the starter gear or flex plate cover as some call it and start the car and see if the noise is louder but maybe take a wrench and double check converter bolts first . My RM S/W bolts looked good but only needed to be tightened a flat on 2 bolts problem solved so looks can be deceiving. good luck bake

Try the starter solinoid. my buddie had the same problem with his ranger and the starter soliniod sent constant power to the starter resulting in the starter click when the engine is on!

Here's something interesting i have a 86 poncho with 305 4 my work car.The damn thing was making a ticking noise also checked wires at plugs allgood took off air cleaner and there was a plug wire boot just not all the way down so some times it would miss. Just a thought maybe check & make sure your plug wires r all on tight.
