Cam Help

I am wanting a cam that i dont need a stall and heads for. and i was wondering if a regular cam for a 350 works in a Lt1. prolly not since everything else is special. any suggestions on a cam? thanks

go with the LT4 hotcam kit. it gives you all the supporting valvetrain and has been used so much its almost proven to give great results and no trouble on an otherwise stock vehicle. just make sure everything else is working so your not throwing a cam in a messed up engine.

im prolly gonna get the LT4 hot cam...but do i need to spend 530 dollars and get springs retainers and rocker arms, or spend 210 dollars just on the cam only? thanks

I think you need at least: Cam, Lifters, 1.6 Roller Rockers, and Springs.

69z-28 04-14-2006 08:30 AM

to get the full benefit you will need to buy the kit. technically you CAN run just the new cam, but it will bottom out the stock springs, and you should prolly replace the lifters as well so the kit is best to get.

The Kit doesn't come with lifters, so you'd prolly have to get those separate.

From gmpartsdirect.com:
"This kit includes the following items: one camshaft P/N 24502586, 16 roller rocker arms kit P/N 12370839, 16 valve springs P/N 12551483, 16 valve caps P/N 10212808, 16 valve keys P/N 24503856, 16 valve spring shims P/N 10212809. Technical Notes: This kit does not include roller tappets. See valve lifter section 0.459 for the lifter kit."

get some lifters too.lol. anythign should suffice but DONT get Comp R lifters.hehe

cody161 04-14-2006 06:00 PM

the guys at the shop said that i shouldnt need to get lifters b/c roller lifters dont wear like a normal lifter does. what should i do?

archemedes 04-14-2006 07:08 PM

they aren't necessary on a roller cam

cody161 04-15-2006 12:58 AM

ok thanks arch. long tube or shortie headers

69z-28 04-15-2006 01:03 AM

long tubes if you really want the power, shorties if ground clearance is a problem. if you have over 100k mile replacing valvetrain items like lifters is prolly a good idea when you go with a more radical cam. just my .02 cents

cody161 04-15-2006 01:35 AM

i have lowered my car 2 inches...so what about mid length

a cam for a lt1 is different from a regular 350 cam although u can get a regular cam machined to work.. the dowl pin will have to be changed and lt1 cams are drilled and tapped on one end.

if ur gonna do a cam swap id go ahead and do everything right and replace the entire valvetrain. this is a quick list for u

1. cam
2. timing set
3. lifters - one of my rollers on my lifters was almost siezed up so i would replace your stock ones
4. pushrods - some lt1s have hardened stock but id replace just to be safe. 7.200 length
5. rocker arms
6. rocker arm studs - many people choose to go to a 7/16 rocker arm because it is more stable than 3/8.. but only get studs if u get bigger arms.
7. guideplates if u get Non Self Alligning rocker arms
8. valve springs
9. retainers
10. locks
11. valve stem seals

^if u replace all that and do it right the first time it should keep you from having to pull the intake again.. and dont forget about the other expenses of a cam swap like all the lubes and intake gasket kit.
