cheap rear disc for 2nd-gens

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm rear disc.....

Coming to a conclusion on project I've been researching for a while. Big 4-wheel disc for the Camaro. Trying to do it for under $1500 and keep the stock 15" wheels and a functional ebrake appeared about impossible. Wilwood stuff is beautiful, but pricey, and they're not recommended for street use because the calipers dont have dust boots. LT1 ebrakes suck, and the LS1 brakes wont clear 15" wheels.

As it turns out my Camaro will be the first with staggered 98-04 Blazer rear disc. A guy has done a Blazer brake swap before, but needed to relocate his driver side shock to clear the caliper. I read this and thought... WTF.. the pass side would be the one hitting?!?!

Well, the Blazer I test fit my Camaro wheel on was 4WD, the setup this other guy used a while ago was 2WD and the calipers are opposite for some reason. So I figured for the hell of it, I'd buy two rear ends and see if the backing plates were interchangable. Voila! 4WD driver and 2WD pass brakes clears the factory staggered shocks on 2nd-gen Camaros. By dumb luck and a little wrenching I stumbled on a bolt-on rear disc setup for cheap. This also includes the internal parking brake inside the rotor (much more effective than the kits with the pinching ebrake and smaller rotors for waaaay more money) and nice aluminum calipers.

Total cost to swap from 9.5 drum to 11.5" disc = about $450 (with new rotors and Hawk Performance pads).

On the front I'm upgrading the factory 10.5" rotors to 12" 1LE rotors by using late 70s-early 80s Impala spindles (a very common upgrade). Supposedly the B-body spindles will even give me a 1/2" drop. Total cost = about $200 (with new rotors and Hawk Performance pads as well).

I love GM interchangability. RWD ftw!!

Got the whole upgrade done, 1LE front and the Blazer rear.

It took 2 shims (about 1/8") between the housing ends and the backing plates to get the caliper spacing perfect. The extra room actually helps the e-brake cable clear the pass side shock as well.

Bypassed the stock distribution block witha tee in the front and plumbed in an adjustable proportioning valve for the rears to keep them from locking up before the fronts.

That was an original idea. Nicely executed too! I just pussed out and stuck the whole disc brake rear end from a '79 Trans Am under my '70 RS/SS. Ended up having to use the power brake booster/ master cylinder assembly from the TA too. The TA had the 403. So it also had the smaller diameter brake booster to clear a big block engine assembly. My car didn't originally come with the power brake option, so it seemed like a logical upgrade. I even stole the tilt steering column. hahaha
Nice work though. Very clean.
