Cracked head

Yes...this is true. My camaro is out of commission for a few days. I have been losing water like crazy and the engine is smoking a good damn bit. Turns out i have a cracked head (blown head gasket) which ever the case my be.
So my car is going in the shop to have these few things done to it:
1. Head repair
2. Replace valve stem rings.
3. Transmission line is leaking (took 3 quarts to get from my parents house to my house which is a 30min drive.)
After all this im not investing any more money into this godddamn camaro until i get a little secondary vechicle like a small s10 truck or something. Grrr..
...still love my camaro...
Oh and all this is gonna run me in between $1,300 to $1,600 but im guessing $1500.
Not to mention the charge to rent a car which is gonna run me $25a day.. The shop said they will need my car for about 2 days.

MyFirstCamaro 04-24-2006 12:43 PM

if you have the money instead of buying replacements get some aftermarket parts if you can mine as well while its out and open

DDxHellRaiser 04-24-2006 01:17 PM

Just rented a Dodge neon after I dropped my camaro off at the shop.....its sucks looking at the neon where my cama ro always sit.

camaro94 04-24-2006 11:55 PM

I look out and see a Neon in my parking area everyday....with a camaro beside it. ;)

That sucks. Sucks when things break and cost a lot.

Im not sure if its cracked or what, thats just what i think. Here are the symptoms the car has and mybe you all can help me out til' the shop calls me and tells me.
1. Black smoke when first start car then it fades away.
2. A small skip mainly when slowing down to a stop.
ALOT of smoke comming from engine (Engine is not overheated) Goes halfway then fan cuts on.
6. ALot of water lose and coolant lose but I dont see any drips hitting the ground.

I just had a new radiator and new waterpump put on and still same problem.
Im thinking the Valve stem seals deffenitly needs to be replaced.
Also one of the transmission lines have been leaking and just got worse after the new starter was installed.

AT the shop though they are gonna go ahead and fix the valve stem seals and the transmission line while they send the heads to a shop to be checked. Im looking at at LEAST $1300....err help me out guess

Also i havent seen any water in the oil. No water dripping from exhaust...Just ALOT of white smoke comming from engine smells like burning oil or something and some black smoke from tailpipe. and idle hands has jolted but braely noticable.....grrr

Unfortunately the things that are wrong with his car wouldn't have anything to do with aftermarket parts. :)

If you're going through that much water and you're seeing a lot of white smoke......it definitely sounds like a blown gasket or a cracked head. :(

If you're getting black smoke when you start it up, that sounds more like a fuel problem rather than valve seals. If you have bad valve seals or bad rings, then you should see "Blue" smoke, which is oil. White smoke is water, and black smoke is fuel.

Are you sure the smoke is black when you start it?

going through the water and seeing smoke it sounds like a head gasket or something but with the smoking right when u start then fading that kinda sounds like valve guides or something to me, but i would think the smoke should be white (some people say blue but it always looks white to me).

blue89vert 04-26-2006 08:25 AM

that sucks

Now why post that comment? it contributes nothing to the question... :newbie:

As far as smoke..man seems like I got all 3 colors to some extent.
BLACK smoke with tint of BLUE & WHITE out of tail pipe.
ALOT of WHITE smoke comming from engine.

Talked to the guy at the shop and he said that the head isnt cracked but he did see water in the plugs or around the plugs..something like that. Also, he said there was no water in the oil....guess this might be just Blown head Gasket and BAD valve stem seals...Think so?

I know onw thing....After I get this ***** fixed then im gonna go to a car lot and get a little truck, save up and throw in to get my engine rebuilt then throw in a supercharger w/ upgraded exhaust (headers, Hi-flow cat, Maganaflow exhaust) Grrr.

Gonna be a fast v6 3.4l and on the back window its gonna say "Supercharged V6, Come get some..."

DDxHellRaiser 04-26-2006 12:12 PM

1. Massive white smoke from engine itsself smells like burning fluid.
2. ALot of water & coolant lose.
3. Runs hot to the point where fan cuts on faster than usual but never comes close to red.
4. water in plugs.
5. No water in oil.
6. No visible leaks underneath car.
7. Black smoke ffrom tailpipe.
8. Small skip when slowing down to a stop.
9. Idle hand jolts fairly noticble until you really stare it, mainly happens when car is stoped but still in D...

Could all this be the cause of a bad heater core? or Blown head Gasket?

DDxHellRaiser 04-26-2006 03:44 PM

Ok. I called the shop again and I asked how much it cost me for what they already done they said $450. I told them to stop and I called around and found another v6 3.4 motor with 80k miles on it for $675 thats including the fee for delievering it to the shop. Its gonna cost me $1000 for them to swap the motor. all and all $2,125....

I figured if i went ahead and let them send my heads off to be tested and if they were to fix my motor then only the top half would be repaired, the lower half of the motor would still have the original miles on it.

Think im comming out right on this folks?

I have 190k miles on the engine in my car now
Engine im about to buy has 80k...

Str8upChevy 04-26-2006 04:45 PM

Are you sure that other motor is in good working condition? Just because it only has 80K on it doesn't mean there's not something wrong with it. If it comes with some type of warranty then I'd say absolutely!

You definitely have a lot of miles on your existing motor, so yeah.....I'd seriously be looking into replacing or rebuilding it. :) But if that other motor is in good condition, it's a very good deal. IMO

On a lighter note, the comment (grey89vert) posted was simply a gesture of sympathy saying that he feels your pain. You should expect to recieve comments like that all the time, as there not meant to critisize, but rather show support. ;) Sometimes they might not know the answer to a question, so they'll leave a small gesture of support instead.

i agree make sure that the engine is running and everything it could have 80k on it but sat in the backyard for the last 2 years and be completely rusted out or something so be careful with buying that engine and check everything out first and yea str8upchevy is right about grey89vert's comment ull get alot of those lol, but their still kinda nice to have when ur ****** off :D

DDxHellRaiser 04-26-2006 06:12 PM

Engine has a 90day warrenty.

DDxHellRaiser 04-27-2006 08:13 PM

Well I paid $725 today for the engine...*sigh* called the owner of the shop whom is putting it in and he advised me the I should re-seal the new engine. I said ok, so thats about $250 extra. Oh and all this that im spending...counting the engine, labor for putting in the engine, re-sealing, labor for what they already done before i told them im putting in another engine.....comes to....*cries*..$2475. :banghead:
(not to mention $300 for rent and $80 for my cell phone bill)

lol looks like im gonna be living off roman noodles and crackers for a few weeks :lolsign:
