Door Popper Idea
 

Hey guys, got an idea I want to run by you all before I dig into this project.

I want to shave my door handles and still use my factory key fob for trunk release.
What I'm thinking is, I can use the existing keyless entry system to activate the solenoids. I found this schematic of the keyless entry system

Now I can clip the wires on connector 2, pins c, g, and h. Wire pin c to the drivers solenoid, and pin g to the passengers solenoid, and cap off pin h. Currently, pin c is "lock all", pin g is "unlock driver", and pin h is "unlock all".
I'm also thinking this will entail a lot less work than installing the entire system with receiver and all.

Please give me your thoughts and ideas.

Just looks so easy on paper.

The idea is great- I hope it works out. I like your idea of being able to keep the stock key fob.

One little bit of advice- I have read A LOT of people having trouble with shaving the door handles on their cars and keeping them looking food, esp if its a daily driver. The problem lies with the material the door is made of. Because its not metal you can't just weld in plates and fill it. The second problem is expansion differences when you try to fill urethane with something other than urethane. The door material will expand at a different rate than the filler you use so it will more than likely crack.

I'm not trying to shoot your idea down believe me, If it wasnt' such a problem I would do it to my car. I just want to make sure you look at all aspects before jumping in and having an end product that just creates more problems than its worth.

well. i tried hooking up a keyless entry in my car.....it was a pain in the ***. it didn't work. =[

Force Fed... I've heard that a lot too. I'm going to experiment with a few different types of material before I actually go into the door and start hacking. For example I'm going to take a piece of flexible plastic and apply first just a regular body filler, fiberglass strand reinforced filler, filler mixed with fiberglass resin, and the reinforced filler mixed with resin, and see which one is more resistant to flexing and temperature change.
I plan on first fiberglassing the holes then filling with the above mentioned material. I'll let you know which works best imo.

Well good luck- if you find something that holds up be sure to share. Unfortunately with the color of both our cars the sun will put a beating on them.

If some aftermarket company made some flat door skins for our cars I bet they would sell- a lot of people want and like the smooth doors, but not many feel like going thru the headache of smoothing them.

BTW, it was SO VERY EASY. I've heard of the kits being a bit of a pita, but after I figured out how to do the first door, the other took less than a half hour. Seriously, the hardest part was being careful not to scratch up the door panels while taking them off. lol
