Dual exhaust without sounding gay

Hey guys, I just bought a stock 2002 3.8L black camaro. Straight up I love the look of dual exhaust, but in searching through the forums I have discovered many of the dual exhausts sound like a honda civic with a coke can muffler on it.

What exhaust out there sounds decent while giving it that flashy look?

Keep in mind I don't have the money to throw headers or anything into the car to make the exhaust sound better.

Adric 01-18-2008 05:25 PM

Magnaflow? Paarman97maro's sounds preety good.

Jpcrazylegs 01-18-2008 05:26 PM

Is it stock? In the exhaust clips thread many of them have some pretty heavy mods thrown on em.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT7mr...eature=related

It just sounds ew. Know what I mean?

ITSA6 01-19-2008 12:29 AM

magnaflow is probably a pretty good option considering money and stuff. i test drove a 3.8 with a magnaflow system once. it was very nice for a 3.8

paarman97maro 01-19-2008 05:27 AM

magnaflow.

if you really want it to sound good, then spend th extra money for headers.

Bernotas05 01-19-2008 06:15 AM

You could allways go with the center exit..

http://forums.techguy.org/attachment...muffler007.jpg

But no, Magnaflow is probobly one of the best sounding exhausts without other major mods.

Adric 01-19-2008 06:19 AM

Open headers then fake pipes in the back! lol ;)

Pacesetter headers, LT1 3" cat-back piping, custom mandrel bent 3" S-Pipe and cat-delete, single 3" in, dual 2.5" out Cherry Bomb Muffler w/Z-28 clone tipes. Put a cam in it with this exhaust, and you'll drool when you crank it. Quick note though, it is fairly loud; I can drown it out with my radio, and still talk to my passengers, but you can hear it from a couple blocks away (or so I've been told).

paarman97maro 01-20-2008 12:09 AM

That sounds like a flowmaster. I dunno if I like it.

Bernotas05 01-20-2008 04:03 AM

Dont sound that bad, I had flows on my 3.8 when i had one and it sounded ok up to like 4K rpm then it got raspy to all hell.

camaroman0731 01-20-2008 12:22 PM

Not trying to hijack the thread but what would sound good on a 95 3.4?

Bernotas05 01-20-2008 12:32 PM

magnaflow

ITSA6 01-20-2008 12:38 PM

for any V6 just stay away from Flowmaster and stick to magnaflow. best sound for your money

FORCE_FED_Z 01-20-2008 11:19 PM

Well just about any exhaust will sound raspy at upper RPMS no matter what- its the nature of the V6. But everyone else has pretty much covered everything...

Exactly.

The best way to get a good sound out of the 3.8 is to either gut out the cat, or put in a high flow cat, get some headers, and put the exhaust of your choice on it. Personally I dont believe the kind of exhaust makes much difference except in tone. All of them are going to sound rice at about 3k rpm. Even with mine built up, it doesnt sound 'good' at high rpm.

and the real hp difference among the major brands is less than the variance of a dyno

camaro94 01-21-2008 01:48 PM

maganaflow is a good choice, but i love my SLP Loudmouth. Especially at idle, I just love how it sounds. Never been to fond of the flowmaster exhaust. My favorite exhaust is the Borla, and I'd so trade my exhaust in for a Borla if I could get a decent price.

RadRacer 01-21-2008 03:03 PM

It seems the TSP rumbler is the exhaust of choice at CV6

93maro 01-23-2008 04:17 PM

i hate haveing a v6

Gas Mileage
V6 > LS1

Insurance for an 18 year old
V6 > LS1

Its the more practical choice for me at least.

don't be surprised to find them fairly close especially once you mod a little

Yea I know, I owned a 3.8 previously. They definatly have the potential but nothing beats the sound of the v8.

NoRiceInside 01-24-2008 10:18 PM

well i LOVED my 3.4 at idle. especially after my cam. but past half throttle or anything above 2500 rpm was so gay. get a magnaflow and keep everything else stock it will keep the rasp and **** down.

heres my clip for the dude interested. this was a cam, ported heads, stock manifolds, gutted cat, flowmaster muffler:

Why would you post on that worthless...dont know **** site? lol

Custom, Magnaflow, Elderblock, TSP, SLP are your best choices to go for on a 3.8l. As stated no matter what you put on you will have rasp at some level or point.

Gas Mileage: V6<LS1

Insurance: V6>LS1 (depending on your state and record)

The v8's get better highway mileage than the 3.8's, i'll have to find the thread about it, but its true. If it tells you anything crazylegs, I get about 12mpg on my 3.8L.

Jpcrazylegs 01-25-2008 10:27 AM

I average 24mpg, I filled my tank up drove around like normal and did the math. Then again as cars age they suck down gas crazily. My old 4 cylinder 100HP van got like 10mpg haha.

If its a 6 speed, I may be able to believe its close, but theres no way. They have similar, if not, the same size gas tanks and ones going to be feeding two more cylinders. I got close to 30mpg was my best trip last year to csf.

Its all in the gear ratio and adding in that 6th gear Paar. LS1's average about 28mpg highway as said by GM.

Sadly my motor is only about 4,000 miles old.

Jpcrazylegs 01-25-2008 12:32 PM

Why the hell are you getting 12mpg? Do you floor it everywhere?

Turn that cruise control on man lol.

I could see getting 12 if I mashed on the gas alot, but its my first real car that I care about so I drive it like an old man.

archemedes 01-25-2008 12:50 PM

he has mods

Due to my cam, my cruise control doesnt work anymore, the lope is too high, and the rpm is so staggered that the CC system is very confused. I get 12mpg because of the modifications that I have. It sucks, but I love my car regardless.

98CamaroZ28 01-28-2008 04:36 PM

I get an average of 24 on the highway.
