Gears and rear ends
Alright, I need an education lesson.
I plan on upgrading to a posi and 3.42 gears... soon into the future. My rear end is 7.5" right now, correct? I remember a thread on this awhile ago, I just remember getting confused about 2 series and 3 series and **** like that. Does anyone have a simple explanation? Can someone tell me what parts Im going to need also? |
alright...
you have a 7.5" or a 7.625" differential, depending on who you talk to. a 2 series differential is with a gear ratio or 3.08 and below. 3.23 and above is a 3 series. if you want to upgrade to a 3 series ratio, it is possible to keep your differential, just make sure when ordering gears you get it for a 2 series carrier. you probably have a 3.08 ratio, unless you have the Y87 in which case you'd have rear disc brakes (unless its a 97 when they all came with them) and you'd also have a LSD and a 3.42 ratio already. if i were you, since a LSD and 3.42 ratio are stock on all 4th gen M6 V8s and Y87s...look for a used one from one of those cars. you will be able to swap the ring gear just fine, but the carrier bearings and the pinion gear you're better off taking it to someone with a hydraulic press. ive done it before grinding off the old one then smashing the new one on with a long pipe...its not fun tho... there are a few different companies that have differential install kits...when i rebuilt my rear end i went with the whole package. it came with new carrier bearings, pinion bearings, pinion seal, nut, crush sleeve, axle bearings, shims, and ring gears bolts. oh and a quick thing about those ring gear bolts...theyre reverse thread :) like most...found out the hard way ;) |
Best thing you could do is find a complete rear end with 3.42's already and just make sure its good and change the fluid. That's a lot easier than ******* with the insides...thats a pita. trust me. And when u get a new rear end i'll buy your old one from you. I want a 4th gen rear end!! hope that helped
