Highbeam switch is dead. How do I fix? (98 Z28)

Highbeam switch is dead. How do I fix it?

The highbeam switch is located on the turn-signal-lever. When I pull back on the lever I feel no click and the highbeams don't come on. The highbeam switch seems to be busted.
But how do I get to it? Do I have to take apart the steering column? The parts guys at the Chevy house said there was a rod that went to an easily accessable switch, but I don't see anything like that. My Hayes manual doesn't have this in it either (Up a creek without a paddle.)
Anyone here ever replace the higbeam switch? Any tips on how to access it?

archemedes:
Actualy, the switch is underneath the dash above the kick panel. Then you must pull down the other plastic panel that covers the computer plug, very easy. There is a rod that hugs the steering column and goes back to the actual switch. There are two little 5/16 bolts that hold the bracket in place. The bolts are a little hard to get to and facing up. I found the switch, moved it forward a little, and now it all works. The switch is not in the column.

there is one in the column also (it's where the arm mounts)
