A LITTLE ROUGH....

When in drive and sitting at idle, there seems to be a slight problem with the engine running smoothly. The shaking, or roughness, stops after you hit the gas and get moving again, and does not happen while in park as much. What may be the cause of this rough idle. Any ideas?

What kind engine that would help a bit.

BlueZee28 02-14-2006 08:46 PM

i bet the throttle is messed up, you know the little switch you can pull on when under the hood to rev up the engine? i bet it's not sitting correctly, like it's not tight enough. this happened to my Z28 last year, i had to get a new cable for it :banghead:

Bernotas05 02-14-2006 08:56 PM

Yea could be alot of things actually, what year and engine that would help pinpoint some of the most common things

mxracerbrian 02-14-2006 09:02 PM

is your idle too low??? that might be a cause

Bad IAC maybe?

Yea that could definatly do it, IAC is the Idle Air Control module if your not familiar with the short name of it.

archemedes 02-14-2006 10:54 PM

would you like a condensed list or the full one? Start simple, fuel filter, spark plugs wires, cap and rotor (if applicable) EGR, tps, carbon buildup, IAC, a vaccuum leak,PCM issues......

sorry but thats highly unlikely. i dont see how a throttle valve could affect idle. if it were not closing all the way the idle would be high, and it cant close too much.

i'd take a spark plug out and see what that looks like...also take the distributor cap off and inspect that. if you can, inspect the plug wires. it sounds like a plug wire might be burnt.

then it could also be fuel. take the fuel filter off and blow through the tank end of it. if nothing comes out thats the problem...replace it.

the IACV is unlikely. if it were sticking it would probably be sticking completely closed, rare to be sticking in between steps.

it is weird that it only does it in drive though...crap i know of something that acts up when you shift into drive but i forget what it is...

scarfonee 02-15-2006 11:41 AM

sorry, forgot to mention it is a 3.4 Liter V6 on a 1994 Camaro coupe. That should help pinpoint the problem."Yeah i have a car, uh, and the uh, idle,is sort of UNSMOOTH, so to speak. whats the problem?" JK.:D
