LT1 vs V6 Common Problems

Hey all, this is my first time posting on these forums. Earlier this week I put down a downpayment on a 95 Z28 Camaro so I thought it would be a good time to make an account here.

Anyways, my cousin used to have a 96 V6 Camaro and he was telling me about a lot of problems he had with the car. Do these cars just have a lot of common problems or is there a significant difference between the V6 5speed and the V8 6speed as far as repairs go?

Thanks :)

F-bodys can take a beating, stong motors... being that is a 95 and 96 id say your friend either got a beat up one or beats the hell out of the car.. what exactly went wrong with his car?

archemedes 08-05-2005 02:07 AM

things that go wrong usually do that from lack of maintenance

97z2801ss 08-05-2005 03:21 AM

yea lack of maintenance.. and idiots behind the wheel... ask him what went wrong

SOMBirdV6 08-05-2005 09:32 AM

Depends on how he took care of his car. Thats how it all comes down to on any car there is no such thing as ooohhh my honda will go over 200k and ur chevy wont well thats not true it depends on how u keep up with ur car. So if you get a Z make sure its in good shape and the last owner took care of it and now you will have to do the same and it will last you forever.

actually import cars have always rusted faster (they have never treated for protection, and use lighter metal)toyota has said for a few years now they need to catch back up to american quality

The car that I am purchasing seems to be in great condition. For the sale I was actually dealing with the parents who were selling the car for their son who was away for college. Anyways there have only been two owners and the last owner who I am buying from is the owner of 5 mechanic shops. They are very much into cars When I went into their house they had all these racing pictures and trophies. The lady took me into their garrage and they had a pristine condition 68 California Special Mustang in there. They are hoping to start taking it to car shows. They had another car or two in the driveway as well, all looked to be very well maintained and taken care of.

As far as the current condition of the car, I probably couldn't have hoped for any better. The interior and exterior are almost flawless and the engine looked to have been VERY well maintained. From what you guys are saying it sounds like I will just have to keep the car maintained very well and I shouldn't have too many problems.

I will get a list of the problems my cousin had with his V6 camaro, just for discussion sake and post those once I get them :)

Thanks for all the responces.

sweet do you have any pics of it?

archemedes 08-05-2005 06:13 PM

it being a '95 there may be problems (it is a 10 year old car) but they should be minor, things like alternator, and water pump possibly the power window motors. It sounds like the owners were about maintenance which is a great thing

kizzle 08-05-2005 08:51 PM

Heres some of the problems my cousin's 96 V6 encountered:

1. Tune ups were around $1200
2. Waterleaks having to do with the Waterpump
3. Doors falling apart
4. Doors are heavy - dont shut proprely after awhile
5. Front breaks go out really fast
6. Electrical shortout
7. Thieves love them

There were a few other things he encountered but those are what I remember the most.

Besides all this though, my Uncle said they he was REALLY rough on the car and didn't take very good care of it. So I think I will just try to maintain my Camaro the best I can and always keep it in the best shape.

Does anyone have any good maintenence tips?

Thanks

1. Tune ups were around $1200 he got ripped, do it your self for around $40
2. Waterleaks having to do with the Waterpump common with high milage replace pump another $40 or so
3. Doors falling apart can happen if car not washed regularly or doors slammed easy fix
4. Doors are heavy - dont shut proprely after awhile again slamming makes them go out of adjustment, the doors aren't really that heavy
5. Front breaks go out really fast bad driving habits,a nd junk pads do that
6. Electrical shortout hard to say depends where the short was
7. Thieves love them now low on the list top is honda and toyota (except here in AL where it's the '87 caprice)
