Major Problem

I have recently been troubled with an engine problem. I thought it might be the tranny slipping. I took it to Kennedy Transmission, and they said it was my engine cutting out.

I heard from a buddy it might be that **** Optispark Distributor acting up. Or it's being leaked on by something above.

Symptoms:

1. With cruise control on, it will cut out and kick off the cruise control.

2. leaving a drivethrew, it decided to die all together. left the stereo on though, go figure.

3. normal acceleration sometimes cuts out softly and kicks in right away.

4. completely random symptoms. nothing I can re-create when ever I need to.

Has anyone had this crap happen to them? If so is there a cheap fix, or do I need that stupid *** Opti **** thing for $300? I heard there is a fix it kit for $135, but thats **** near half the new one. Plus you need other parts to make it work, so might as well get the new one.

opti is so common on the lt1 you should have a spare

Klique Jun 13, 2005 12:40 PM

So you think that's it?

archemedes Jun 13, 2005 02:39 PM

very very possible

TorqueDog Jun 16, 2005 03:56 PM

Ouch, and the worst bit of it is that you've got an unvented Optispark.

Replace your water pump and your Optispark at the same time, because if your water pump happens to die next, get ready to buy another Optispark too.

my cars been doin almost the same thing that yours is and it was the maf...it was dirty as hell and flowing little or no air, b4 you mess w/ the opti get some electrical contact cleaner and clean the mass air good, if its still actin up you know its somethin else

Good advice SLPowerZ, I'll check it out. Yes, I've heard the same TorqueDog. What do you suggest. Electric water pump? I hear they have a short life....

electrics are great on drag cars, but if you drive for long periods they seem to have a high failure rate, also upgrade to the vented and then do teh msd upgrade

What exactly is the MSD ignition Arch? I know it's an ignition system, but they have other systems such as some sort of special booster coil thingy.... Not sure, get back to me.

archemedes Jun 18, 2005 10:36 PM

msd has a cap and rotor upgrade that is supposed to help with teh failures

Klique Jun 18, 2005 10:37 PM

Is the little optical sensor the part that goes out the most?
