MSD-6AL worth the money?
I can get a 6AL for $230+ (tax included) and I was wondering is this thing worth the money? I know on older vehicles these MSD boxes can make a difference but how about on a 1995 Z28?
Thanks |
Ive been using Mallory ignition equiptment so far for the most part just and can't say its ever let me down, knock on wood. I just purchased a mallory hyfire VI CI ignition box and ill let ya know how it turns out. I bought it because 1 ive used mallory in the past and 2 it seemed to have the most options for the price. You have to double check if it works for distributorless ignitions tho cuz im not 100 percent sure that it does. Most likely yes, 100 percent no.
Heres there little advertisement and options it has, retails new for 240 bux. "Faster processing for improved performance. Ignition Box, Hyfire VI, Digital Multi-Spark CD, Retard, 2-Stage Rev Limiter, RPM Window Switch, Each These HyFire VI Digital CD ignitions from Mallory give you optimum performance, accuracy, and reliability in a microprocessor-controlled CD ignition system. They have state-of-the-art digital circuitry with four times faster processing, and the ability to boost the proportional retard capacity with the optional harness. They feature an easy-to-use digital display with push button controls, to let you see exactly what's going on in real time. You get two-stage rev limiting in 100 rpm increments, an automatic start retard circuit for easier starting, and a built-in rpm window switch that is ideal for nitrous. They're very versatile and work great for supercharged, turbo charged, and nitrous applications." |
You wouldn't happen to know the model number would you?

yes i do gimme a sec 2 find it

650-685 thats the part # from jegs, you can throw it into summit racings website as well and itll come up but itll automatically change the part # a little. 685 stays the same with both part #s tho.
|
if ya dont need all those features mallory makes a 6AL type ignition box as well for like 80 bux cheaper than MSD's
part # 650-6853M on jegs |
It will definetly work on your car. I just got done installing the Mallory box on my 95 Z28. I'm with Rex on this one...Go Mallory. Both of my previous MSD boxes have gone out on me with other vehicles. So far the Mallory works perfectly and there is a very noticeable increase in power. Pretty smooth install too if I shall say so myself. :D

Does Mallory make a wiring harness for a simple install like MSD?
http://store.summitracing.com/partde...=KeywordSearch |
youd have to search bro this is all i came up with, LT1s use crank triggers right?
2-wire mag p/u wiring harness Two wire harness for Mallory 81,84,96,97,98 & 99 series distrbutors and crank triggers. Purple and Green. Model Number: 29787 |
You can use either one of these two harnesses:
MSD Part #MSD-8876 Mallory Part #29068 http://www.mrgasket.com/ProductDetai...xtSearch=29068 I used the MSD harness myself due to the fact that I had it in my garage left over from my other MSD box installs. |
the msd has had reliability issues the mallory hasn't also note there is no power difference over stock

You definitely can't go wrong upgrading the ignition system on a pre 96 LT1. If you had a 96 / 97 LT1 I would tell you to save your money, but on the 93 thru 95's there is some proof that the ignition boxes and better coil can make a noticeable difference. I personally have the MSD digital 6 on my 96 WS6 car and I'm pretty sure it made very little difference (maybe a little :) )

everything I've read says don't waste your money there have been no improvements on the dyno

yep
