new memeber

hi guys i am new to modding camaros. right now i have a 91 but my little drove it for about 8 months when he smashed up his jetta and really messed the car up.(close to the total/cost to much to fix line) because of that i am thinking of getting a new camaro. here is my question i love the older bodys of camaros 87 up to the 92. now my question is i want to get as many hp out of this car so should i get a 350 right off the bat or get a 305 ? i want to make this drag ready so i am going to sink a good bit of money in to his. also what would be the best year if i am trying to make this a drag camaro

thanks kilo
p.s. i hope this is the right area

69z-28 01-12-2005 08:31 AM

hey, welcome. ok, if you want that body style it goes from 85-90 then 91-92 have a little diff. GFX. they are all kinda same the tho, yea you should get a 350 cause off the bat the torque si so much greater, and you can get good heads and stuff for 350s. if you want to spend a lot of money and go all out. wait for a nice 350.

welcome to project camaro buddy

Camarocam 01-12-2005 11:53 AM

Welcome to project camaro! good luck getting a new camaro I would go with a 350 casue I went with a 305 and wish I would have gone with a 350 or even was looking at a 406.

archemedes 01-12-2005 01:18 PM

go 350 the 305 has issues with reliability plus low power, and welcome

Welcome to :yeahpc:

kilobyte 01-12-2005 03:43 PM

thanks guys for the input but i have one more question i was looking at the history of the 3rd gens and it looks like every 2 or so years they change up the eng what would be my best bet for modding i was thinking 90 or an 87 camaro.

archemedes 01-12-2005 03:50 PM

the engine didn't really change that much revisions to camshaft timing, and maybe intake, a tpi is going to be better than a tbi unless you are planning on a new induction system

camaro94 01-12-2005 03:56 PM

welcome...

NoRiceInside 01-12-2005 04:30 PM

yeah problem is thought not many third gens had 350s. it was an option for the z28s and standard on irocs, but both are exensive.

kilobyte 01-12-2005 04:40 PM

well i found some 350s around me for about 3g witch is not that bad i am willing to pay that if i have to. and i am sorry i am new to the whole tbi tpi terms. i am thinking of going to just try and get a 90 or i want to get an 87 both i can get for around 3g

NoRiceInside 01-12-2005 05:01 PM

well TBI stands for throttle body injection. here's an easy way to think about it, the setup is similar to a carburetor. theres a large throttle body with a fuel injector built into it...and TPI stands for tuned port injection. this is bascially how all cars are today, they have a throttle body in front, then intake runners to the manifold, then fuel injectors into each runner. i realize tuned port injection has other forms, but the most common form is the L98 with the long intake runners:

Welcome...Ill be there 4 all ur 3rd gen needs...Arch will steal some but hey ive learned 2 live with it :lolsign: :nana:

NoRiceInside 01-12-2005 05:16 PM

seems like i'm starting to steal it too ;)

69z-28 01-12-2005 06:36 PM

yea , but you are wrong, irocs didnt come standard with 350's. they were optionson the cars. and one more thing. the 350 tpi motor in camaros (L98) is not the same as the 350 in corvette motors i dont think.

NoRiceInside 01-12-2005 06:47 PM

well its the same situation as the LT1 and LS1, its the same motor, just detuned a bit.

NoRiceInside 01-12-2005 06:47 PM

oh and different engine code.

archemedes 01-12-2005 08:40 PM

the 305 was standard pretty much until the end of the run, the 350 had to be special ordered, the block and intake was the same as the vette, the heads may have been too, but I can't remember, teh cam and exhaust were different as tehy always have been

ok there guys so then what ver of the 350 I.E. the year of the car should i get to get the most bang for the buck?

imported_Kyle 01-13-2005 04:11 PM

Ok. I am not just saying this because i have one :P but i LOVE my 350 TPI. The guy i bought it off of professionaly installed a Summit, headers, FULL flowmaster cat-back system, and gutted the catalytic converter and now im running over 300hp just from those things. My camaro is an 1989 IROC (SEE BELOW) :P

kilobyte 01-13-2005 04:52 PM

does the irocs 350 come with the tpi or the tbi? i am still a little fuzzy on this

and kyle i love your car i want mine almost just like yours just with t tops

69z-28 01-13-2005 05:28 PM

if its a 350 its gonna be TPI unless of coarse they did somethign there own way with like an intake and carb setup, but basicallly if you get any stock 350 TPI camaro from 87-92 it will be the same as far as stock hp and torque, so ne 350 car you find in those years is good, they made like 50 350s in 86 so watch out for that and also if its a 350 5 speed be very careful and ask the person cause they didnt make those. make sure you actually are looking at a 350 and some ******* just doesnt say its a 350, and it has a manual, beacuse a lot of people just think all irocs are 350's or they will try to scam u. heres some numbers for all third gen engines.

Welcome To project camaro!! :) good luck!

imported_Kyle 01-13-2005 05:59 PM

Thanks kilobyte :) I love it too. heh

kilobyte 01-13-2005 06:07 PM

thanks man that is alot of really really good info i did not know they did not make 350s with a manual tranny in 86 i was looking at the 86,87,89s in manual and was wondering why i could not find anything for 86

imported_Kyle 01-13-2005 06:11 PM

They didn't make ANY 3rd gen's with a manual transmission, i don't believe.

69z-28 01-13-2005 06:17 PM

yea, here it is... you could never get a third gen f-body with a 350 and also a stick, you could get a 305 and stick, or a 350 and auto. but never a 350 stick. you could not get a 350 until 86 and they only made 50 i think. so most likely if you want a 350 car just get any 350 from 87-92 because chances are of coarse u wont find an 86 with a 350 unless it had a swap.

imported_Kyle 01-13-2005 06:22 PM

Ok, what i meant was they didn't make any 3rd gen 350's with manual transmissions. Sorry. :P

69z-28 01-13-2005 06:35 PM

yea its cool.lol

kilobyte 01-13-2005 10:01 PM
