Non Functioning E-break

my e-brake does NOT work :banghead: lol.. its been like this since i have bought it.. it is really hard to yank up and is hard to lower, and it doesn't raise that much either (about half the height it should go) before it cant go any higher.. It also does not stop me from doing anything except for moving at idle lol.. any suggestions?? thanks

Check all your moving parts- by the rear brakes, the cables, and all the parts in the console..make sure they are all moving freely..something somewhere has to be bound up on you-

archemedes 09-15-2006 01:58 AM

I bet the cables are frozen, very common when they aren't used, but any moving part can cause it , just the cable is real common

idf it will stop u from moving while in gear its as good as anyother 3rd or 4th gen e-brake ive seen

FORCE_FED_Z 09-17-2006 11:24 PM

Mine works just fine- it obviously won't hold back the car, but it would serve its intended purpose should I ever need it too.

MeenZ28 09-24-2006 10:55 AM

How hard would it be to replace the cable if it's seized?

FORCE_FED_Z 09-24-2006 01:49 PM

not too hard- they connect pretty easily at both ends- probably spend almost as much time getting the car up high enough to crawl under as you would replacing the cable itself.

archemedes 09-24-2006 05:51 PM

they are designed to be replaced really (amazing considering the way everything else is engineered)

Mines the exact opposite, mine pulls through really easy, it still works I just think it needs to be adjusted.

So, what all is involved in the system? I have the ebrake lever and cable, and will likely be going with 98-02 disc in the rear. How many/what cables would I need to buy?

98CamaroZ28 04-14-2007 09:21 PM

you would need to do a rear end swap or some kind of an adapter for that woody, I dont think a 98-02 stock disc is going to even work on your bolt pattern, you need to find ones that are made for your car, the 98-02 camaro stock rotors is crappy anyways...

woody80z28 04-15-2007 09:48 PM

I have the stronger 8.5" rear end right now, and it is a different width than the weak 7.5" in 4th-gens. I also have leaf springs, not coils in the rear, so the stock mounting locations would not work either.

The bolt pattern is definitely the same (5 x 4-3/4), and the backing plates are even the same 4-bolt setup as well. I just need two pass. side assemblies to clear my staggered shocks.

98-02 rear disc is light years better than 70-81 rear drum, trust me.
