Oil leak question
 

well yesterday i brough my car to gm to get my electrical work troublshot and i need a new electronic door actuator got that with labor and all that 55o, bit steep but that kind of stuff i bring to them but i told thme to look for a leak because i couldnt find it apparently my oil pan by the trans is leaking and to replace the gasket i need to drop the tranny.....is that right either way i am bringing it to aother place to do that and they said my stering pump is rotting out and leaking but i found o leaks on that but is that right about chaging the gasket and al that on there

Sounds like its your oil pan gasket...check your rear main seal as well. This is a very very common problem with fbodys (maybe just the V6 not sure on V8s) Whatever you do DONT have GM fix it they will rape u in the *** price wise. Take it somewhere else. If its just the gasket should be like 400-500 bucks...800 or so if both. Could probably be done even cheaper then that. Try looking for a performance shop that specailize in Fbodys. If you want to do it yourself go for it prepare to spend ALOT of time on it and yea tranny will need to come out and ur gona have to lift the engine up to.

yeah, i wasnt going to have gm do it i jsut wanted to see what there diagnostics were, hmm so either way im looking to spend a pretty penny

This is only my 2 cents, but depending on how bad the leak is, dont worry about it. My rear main seal leaks ever so slighty and I was quoted $500 to fix it but its really on a nusance more than anything. I honestly wouldnt pay to get it fixed unless you are leaking a quart a day or something awful like that. Just dont let your oil level get too low and keep an eye on it.

hmm well there are oil spots everywhere i park my car , garage , and 2 different spots outside in my drive way so it has to be somewhat steady.......i dunno we have a local garage my dad is going to take it to and there going to tighten it up and see what it looks like and all that **** so

pay to have it done. oil pan gaskets are not easy on these cars.

if its a rear main, then it can be done easily, just drop the trans. but if its the pan there are two ways. unbolt the motor mounts and pull the engine up as high as you can, then struggle to get the pan out. or you can avoid the struggle and drop the whole subframe :D

Yeah, your best bet is to have a shop do it. Takes about a day or so at a shop.

im not worried bout time and i deff am having it done but i can jsut drop the sub frame and get to it that way ?

hey i took my car to the Ex-Chevy dealer corvette specialist for a leak and overheating problem last year and after about 600 bucks everything is fine and dandy. the catch is that he tried to fix it once and it was 400+ for that one trip but since he didn't fix it all the first time he took it back and fixed it and didn't charge labor. Good honest people are wonderful to have on your side. just last week i had my car in there to take car of another leak and once again no labor. look for an honest mechanic

yea definatly have a professional do it my friend did it a while ago on his firebird and he figured it would be fine just to do it himself but after he did he drove it and it just pretty much dumped all the oil and he just ended taking it to have someone do it

DIY yeah right there are some thing that i can deff do but most of it i will get done im 16 and dont have the know how what so evre to do it
