Possible EGR problem

Hey all, my little brother has a 95 V6 camaro and he's having trouble. I'll try to include as much info as possible here, sorry if it makes for a long read but I moderate another message board and I hate it when people don't provide enough info.

A while back, the car through a Service Engine Soon light. They took it to a dealership, who told them there was something wrong with the EGR system. They wanted $100 or so to fix it, but my stepfather decided to just take it to a friend's shop. That shop cleaned out the EGR valve and the light went away. Well, a while later, it came back. They did the same thing and just had the shop clean out the valve... but the light didn't go away this time.

The light usually comes on shortly after the car has been running for a while, after a few quick accelerations and stops. It doesn't go away until the car is turned off. That's about all I know.

Now, any suggestions? The car has about 144K miles on it, so I'm not sure if an engine cleaner might help. I've heard sea foam can work nicely, but I think I've also heard some horror stories... is it any good?

All ideas are appreciated. Thanks again.

I personally think seafoam works good... It has for me so far anyway. Maybe you need a new EGR?

Any idea where I can get a cheap replacement EGR valve? (Assuming its just the valve that is bad)

I dunno... why not replace the whole unit if it isnt just the valve... Im not sure how much they are tho.. Check ebay, or find one at a local parts store.

Hmmm.... how long do cats normally last on the v6 camaro? I suppose that might be a possibility, although it just passed emissions, so who knows.

my car has about 62,000 miles on it...all original besides my intake and exhaust, but that was just muffler to the tip...nothing in front of the axel was ever touched until then on the exhaust...i will get a picture of a burnt up EGR valve...i still have mine...

Oh! Could you tell the EGR valve was screwed from the outside? Without even taking it off? That would be nice, but from EGR valves that I've seen, even if it was screwed inside, it would look the same outside...

i had the same problem on my 3.4. the light is intermittent because the valve is intermittent. just cause the light goes off doesnt mean the problems solved.

you will most likely need a new EGR valve. thats what i ended up doing. i got a new one from GM for like 300 bucks. you can probably get one used on ebay or trom tacreationsusa.com.
