i just had my fuel pump changed on my 86' camaro and the guy was looking at it and said the fuel sending unit was bad and is charging my 667$ with a tow included do you guys think thats a rip off?

archemedes 12-18-2005 10:19 AM

nope, it's a pita to do, and those parts are expensive (the sender for my gp runs $300 used)I just did a quick online search, and the pump is listed at $70 no sender listed at all, which means it probably gets a premium. You also have to figure the labor I think that pays 6 hours at $75 an hour (that is conservative on the cost)so without sender or towing your at $520, figure he marked the pump up a bit (they always do) and your pretty close to what you paid

Had a fuel pump sending unit and all that put into my 97 with tow in and it ran 1055 i think i got riped off but i was leaving to come out to this great country of iraq yea. So i didnt have time to do it my self. So had to take the hit in the pocket book.

technically (according to the service manual) the rearend has to come out to do it, it can be done without, but is a major pita

Tell that to the guy that put one in my ride before I bought it.
I found this when putting in my cage, after taking out all the carpet I noticed a black garbage bag RTV'ed just behind the rear seat. I started to tear it open and found a piece of sheet aluminum rivited down and they put black RTV and a garbage bag to seal it up. I had to find a piece of sheet metal and weld it back in to fill the hole they cut to get to the sending unit and pump. I talked to the owner that had it before me and told him what the shop did and he had no idea thats how they changed it out.

I did change the pump out while we had it open and put a 255L in it, easiest EFIi pump swap I ever did!

took mine out, replaced it with a piece of hose the same length put it back in and mounted an external pump, f*ck doin that **** twice :lolsign:
