Questions about turboing a camaro

Please excuse the newbie questions, but I haven't been able to find answers to some of my questions by searching the internet. I'm trying to decide what my next project car will be. Specifically, I'm interested in building a turbocharged Camaro, because Colorado's altitude really hurts NA power. I'm not looking for a 7-8 second drag car, just as fast and as fun a sports car as I can possibly make.

Anyways, if any of you guys have experience/knowledgs on this subject, I'd love any answers I could get.

1. What are the major difficulties with turboing a Camaro? Week points that need to be re-inforced, etc. I know beefed up internals and lower compression are a must, but will the block itself break? (Apparently that happens a lot on 5.0 mustangs.)

2. Is it true that the V6's in Camaros are the same block as the ones in Buick Grand Nationals? (Thought I saw a reference to that in some other thread.) If so, it would be fun to build some of that legendary power without the legendary price.

Well, I just forgot what my third question was, so I will stop typing. Thanks guys!

the 3.8s might be the same, theyre the same displacement, but i'm not sure about the block. adding a turbo to a v8 is tricky. theres almost no room. on a v6 its also tricky, but it is possible.

Completely different engines, sorry.

Ok, I doubted the engines would be the same, but was curious. Has anyone turboed a Camaro here? I'd love to be able to hear what people's opinions of them. It seems that supercharger's are more popular here.

ProjectCamaro is correct. The Buick Grand National motor and the Buick 3800 Series II motor are entirely different beings. The GN was a 229ci 3.8 whereas our 3800s are 231ci.

The current 3800 is actually a better starting platform for a turbo application than the old GN motor... but the GN motor was just that **** good that it didn't matter, people are running 12s on the stock turbo with those cars.

I'm currently working on my car to turbo it for this summer. I'm using the Buick 3800 Series II as my starting point, then adding a Garrett Grand National OE turbocharger, rebuilt at 53,000 miles, then had the housing polished, with a custom aluminum bar and plate intercooler, adjustable FMU, adjustable wastegate actuator, and a little bit of work. :)

the 3800 is actually considered one of the best most reliable engines gm ever produced

Thanks for all your information. I will definately have to look in to the 3800 more. Sounds like that could be a really interesting one. How about the V8s? Anybody here have a turbo V8?

Agreed. My car has 400,000 Kilometers on it. (stock engine). That is 250,000 miles. And it has been driven every year in the winter. Cold starts outside in -40*c mornings, which is actually -40*F also. It is a tank.

I won't try and talk you out of a turbo, but if you are lookin for the easiest power, buy a V8 and supercharge it or add juice- then you'll have some fun.
