RK Sport Supercharger question
 

Hi guys,

I noticed on the RK supercharger they say that it only works up to the 9th month of 1998:

RKSport/Powerdyne Camaro 95-98 9th month 3.8L Supercharger Satin Kit. 95- to the 9th month of 98 V6 3.8 6lb Supercharger Kit - Satin. (PLEASE read off the production date on the door)

Is after 9th month 98 when they went to a straight intake from an angled one? What exactly is different in camaros made after 9th month in 98? (I know in 2000 they went electronic throttle).

Also how do you guys feel about this kit? Ideally I'd love to get a turbo, it seems like turbos are far more efficient. But the sad reality is that I'm not all that much of a mechanic and it seems that superchargers are a far easier install. Is this true?

I know hollander interchange gives a different engine part number (complete engine) probably is just intake and maybe some computer issues

Computer issues is a problem too, they changed something in the PCM also. At least this is what im told.

I also prefer turbos over superchargers depending on the situation. Rksport's turbo kit is one of the few kits around for a 6banger, so its quite popular, although there has been alot of bearing problems with them. Viper can chime in here and tell you more about it, but for the most part, if you've got the money, do it!

hopefully viper will say something about it cause im curious too cause i read that a while ago and didnt know why its only till the 9th month of 98

Yes, part way thru 1998 they went with the straight, electric TB. You can get that kit for a 99-02 I know guys who have them, just have to specify what year your car is or just fabricate the intake tube. The PCM shouldnt be a problem either.

Compared to a turbo, its MUCH easier to install and needs way less tuning and fabrication. Its a great kit, I highly reccomend it. A turbo will generate more power, but if you are a noob to modding/tuning/fabricating, then go with the Powerdyne/Rksport kit, you wont be dissapointed.

It has to do with the Throttle body and the PCM. They have it all figured out now, they were having problems with the newer cars because of the PCM, but they have it straightend out last time I called about it (before I got my turbo). If you go to order the kit, get the date that your car was made out of your driver door jam, and give it to RK Sport to make sure they get the PCM and everything else correct. I researched it a little bit when I was thinking of going with it. One main thing is make sure u use the Power wrap belt routing. Check out this site http://home.comcast.net/~grayman99/guide.htm

does anyone have any idea how much power a supercharger like that would actually add?

Tuned with a 9psi pulley, on a DD tune gets about 45rwhp. Thats on a Powerdyne, but I would think there wouldnt be much difference.

About 10 rwhp per 1 psi. So for 6 psi pulley...60 rwhp.

How do you figure that? 9 psi and only 45 rwhp???

BTW, the RK Sport kit is a Powerdyne supercharger. I just wanted to make sure that was clear and not to confuse anyone.

Depends on the tune. With a mild DD tune your going to almost half that.

Friend of mine has the powerdyne with a 9psi.

As much research as I've done on the Powerdyne for the 3.8, I've never heard of anyone getting that low of numbers. I'm wondering if your friend should do a compression check or something. I dunno, all cars react differently to boost, but generally people are getting 10 rwhp per 1 psi on the Powerdyne.

any power adder is only as good as the backing mods (if you don't change cam you get less than if you have the right one, same with the tune wrong tune kills more power on modded vehicles than almost any other item I think)
