Rough idle, check engine light
Ok, maybe not rough idle, but my car runs wierd when it's idling. The rpm's will hold between 1000-1500 and every so often (i'd say 3-5 seconds) the rpms dip for just a second and then come back up to the idle speed.
It's like the computer's trying to lower the idle, but can't do it or something. Any ideas what the problem is? Also, there's a check engine light, could this be related to the idle issue? |
Check the IAC (Idle Air Control) or run a diagnostic code test on it.

i think i'm gonna take it in...
and just tell them to fix it. i've gotta have my ride goin by this spring!!!! i'm tired of sitting and waiting for it to be fixed... tho i'm slow at fixing it. |
Alright. Let me know what they find out.
|
run the code
|
what do i need in order to run the code?
should i take it into a shop to do that? |
find a buddy with a red brick (code reader) or i think some places do that for like 20 bucks
|
get a haynes manual and a paper clip, or spend about 10 bucks on a reader at any parts store
|
10 dollars??? what kind of reader is this? Ive always only known the expensive ones (snap on)
|
Paper clip is the quickest and cheapest way to do it. Thats what i always used on my 3rd gen.

yeah at my work, we have a couple of them. The snap-on one was a lot more than 175! i think it was well over a $1000!
|
snap on = way over priced the tech1 that the dealership I worked at used was only $200, a tech2 runs around $300 off the trucks, or about $200 through the supplier that makes them
|
yeah snap-on is really overpriced but thats the brand of choice for my field. Everyone will give you a "lifetime warranty" but that doesnt help you much when your on a job fixing equipment so they can continue working and then a tool breaks! I own a lot of snap-on tools....thier worth the money!
|
I own one snap on tool (and it's broken) I prefer mac or their parent company stanley (take a stanley to any wal-mart and they replace it no questions asked even when it shows abuse)mac has mailed me repalcements for screwdrivers that I used as prybars
|
im not saying snap-on tools dont break! anything can break. Im just saying we have had the best luck with them.
We have a snap-on truck that comes to my work every wednesday so that also helps with replacements and buying. |
got a box thingy.
plugged it in. got about 4 different codes, lost the paper, reset the computer. ran the car, got another code (repeat) only one showed up this time: Code 36 MAF sensor burn-off voltage was missing. Check MAF sensor burn-off relay and terminal "D" on MAF. Direct Ignition System fault - loss of 24x signal or extra or missing pulses in electronic spark timing signal Ignition system fault - Loss of high resolution pulse signal those are the three things under a code 36 in the manual that came with the code reader, where if i look up a code 36 online it reads just the first one about the MAF. soooo, whattya think? |
see if you get voltage from teh relay (or swap the relay if you have one handy)
