RS 305 to 350 Crate Engine

Ok well I was lookin around on F-Body Motorsports and I came across crate engines in the 3rd Gen section and they had a a 330hp 350 crate engine that only cost $2,339 which I thought was a good engine price. Now my question is If I had a 305 Engine in a 3rd gen around how much would I spend to swap to the new 350 engine? Its 2,339 for engine then another 2-3 grand for install maybe? I dunno If a expert here could tell me what all would be needed to complete a swap like this please fill me in on all or what I would need to know before I started thinkin serious of this.

figure 2500 the difference between a 305 and 350 is internal, you'll need some prom updates if you keep the factory computer (which I would advise it will cost less that way too just a short block)

Well if I were to get one soon a rs model 305 since that all I could really find I would more then likely would just put a whole new crate engine in it cause all the ones for sale have high mileage and a new engine would be great. But If I got lucky I could get a great deal on a 3rd gen with a 350 already in it but those are hard to find with low miles as well.

BTW - Ima come out and say it im the biggest 3nd gen idiot there is thats why I ask so many questions about them cause I dont know to much about them espically when it comes to engine swaps or building them up etc....

the parts from a 305 bolt onto a 350 (short block needs heads ,oil pan intake, valve covers, and accessories full engine has heads , oil pan, and valve covers)

i did a lot of research on this a few months ago. and yea Jes and Arch got you covered. BTW just rip the computer out, go hei ign. and put a carburetor on it.lol. i think its so much easier than f.i. and having to deal with custom proms and stuff.

SOMBirdV6 11-25-2004 10:51 AM

Doing It the way arch is saying how much would that cost?

archemedes 11-25-2004 04:32 PM

buy the engine, if you do the work you save a bit a couple hundred for fluids and misc supplies, get an ecm from a junk yard $50 or a new one for a 350 $150ish so complete around 3 grand more reliable than a carb engine (for the most part anyway) don't have to worry about emissions, and cheaper you already have most of the parts

JesasaurusRex 11-25-2004 04:33 PM

The cost of that short block plus a few bux for running to the nearest autozone or what ever for parts u need. What he is saying is you can throw ur heads/intake manifold/FI or Carb ontop of that 350 bottom end. Everything bolts up the same bro. Only thing different between a 350 and a 305 is the bore size. Now, IMO, I think you can build a much stronger bottom end by urself then paying 2000 bux for a built one. Let me know if you want to build it urself (gotta start some day) and I can walk ya through it, online and on the phone if you want. Buying something built is just a waste of money IMO. But hey lemme know if you wanna build it or if you wanna buy it either way ill help ya out.

Cool, would be glad if you could help me Im starting to think about doing this and went out and looked online for any 3rd gen v8 that was cheap. I have a question if I picked up a v8 3rd gen 305 and it had lets say over 130k miles when replacing it with a 350 bottom end would that effect the mileage? Ive seen some late model 3rd gens for sale with a 305 for like jsut over a 1,000 and they say they run so gettin something like that and changing the bottom end would do alot of good right?
