Shortening Rearend

Does anyone know if the axles taper after the spline on a 96 camaro? Thanks in advance.

JesasaurusRex 11-21-2005 08:32 PM

dont get the question, is your question do you need shorter axles or can u just cut ur to size? Yes you will need shorter axles, the spline part of the axle isnt the entire length only the part in the pumpkin.

RSONAIR 11-21-2005 09:02 PM

I was told that if the axles tapered after the spline they could not be shortened and I would have to get new ones made.

JesasaurusRex 11-21-2005 09:19 PM

If ur putting in a 12 Bolt or 9" then ur probably making a decent amount of power and id toss the 28spline axles if i were you anyways.

NoRiceInside 11-21-2005 10:11 PM

dude just tell us why you need a shorter rear end and we'll tell you your options.

but...if you dont feel like going that route...yes, the splines are tapered on the ends.

RSONAIR 11-21-2005 10:34 PM

Thanks NoRiceInside. I am shortening my axles to fit 22x10" wheels.

JesasaurusRex 11-21-2005 10:38 PM

22s...i refuse to help any more

RSONAIR 11-21-2005 10:44 PM

:) Sorry man...different strokes for different strokes. Im not going for the gangsta look. Going for the old rodder look.

NoRiceInside 11-21-2005 11:12 PM

why do you need to shorten the axle for 10" wide wheels? up to 11" wheels will fit with no modifications.

the real problem is the 22" wheels, which wont fit.

archemedes 11-21-2005 11:16 PM

22 inch wheels don't look like hot rod wheels, the axle shouldn't make them not fit, the body would be the issue

JesasaurusRex 11-21-2005 11:20 PM

depending on backspacing it might be an issue

archemedes 11-21-2005 11:21 PM

then they are the wrong wheels (I know they already are) but it's cheaper to buy the right backspacing than to modify the rear

JesasaurusRex 11-21-2005 11:24 PM

true, but a lot of those bling wheels only come in certain backspacing, im guessing hes focused on one kind and they dont make them in the correct back spacing.

Might wanna look at gettin a rear out of a 3rd gen, same exact thing sept for shorter than a 4th gens.

RSONAIR 11-22-2005 08:38 AM

I am tubbing the back end. I need to shorten the rear so the 22's will tuck under the fender. Just to clear it up the 22's are just going in the back, 20's up front.

JesasaurusRex 11-22-2005 12:10 PM

Do you know how ugly thats gonna look?
