Transmission problems

Howdy, I have an 1984 Camaro with a 700R4 tranny. The other day I noticed that the motor (2.8) had to rev very high in order for the transmission to shift. :banghead: It does this for first and second gear but has no problem with third or fourth. Can anyone clue me in as to what is possibly going on? Is my tranny dead / dying / or is there something that can be done? Also, if the transmission needs to be replaced, are there any special tools required for rebuilding it? I would like to rebuild it myself to save some money but I've never opened a transmission before and am not sure about the skill level required or if there are any special tools needed.

Thanks for the help! :D

what rpm does it shift at in first and second? doesnt even shift if you let off the gas?

try changing the fluid and filter first, if that doesn't help the trans needs help.Take it somewhere if you don't have someone to help, I will work on anything except an auto trans, there are a bunch of small ball bearings in the vlave body that if one is out of place you can kill the whole thing

No doesn't shift if I left off gas. Not sure about the RPM, its really high though cause I keep getting scared that the tranny won't shift and I'll ruin the motor.

i'm not sure exactly what the 700R4 uses to hold 1st and 2nd...but the transmission needs to be overhauled. the band(s) or clutch(es) for 1st and 2nd or worn.
