V6 to 383 Conversion

I have a 2001 Firebird V6 Automatic and I want to convert it to a 383 with a 6 Speed. Before you tell me that I should just buy a Trans Am, hear me out. This is just a "what if" situation. What major mods are necessary? How much would it cost?

NCamaro94 06-07-2006 08:46 AM

engine, transmission, wiring, computer.

is this an already built 383? from where?

bhpbo 06-07-2006 05:24 PM

My first thought was a GM Performance Crate Motor. Summit Racing: $4,789.88

Or maybe picking up a 350 from an engine shop and stroking it to a 383.

Another thought was the LS2, but I don't know if it will fit and I think it is a lot more expensive.

Does an engine come with a computer and will I need a new rear end?

yea im about to put a zl402 which is a LS1 in my car so ive been researching it for a while, and since u have a 3800II ull need all the same stuff which is pretty much everything lol and im not sure about u but i dont have a limited slip or posi so i need a new rear end, cpu, wireing harness, engine, transmission, distributor, fuel pump and lines, either a new k member or modify motor mounts for new engine, ls1 fuel tank because the sending unit is in the tank on a v8 and not on a 6, new springs because the springs are rated for my weight engine so i need stiffer ones, also the guage cluster needs to be changed to one for the v8 or modified, there is also alot more like alternator, ac compressor, ect., after doing research ull find out there is alot more to it then u thought at first but i have a ton of sites and research on it so if u want any just let me know. Sorry bout the long post lol :D

The sender is in the tank of the v6 as well. I swapped mine with Walbro in my 3800.

It would be a hell of a lot easier and cheaper to change the fuel pump instead of a whole new tank. Just get a Walbro. Check out the write up below. I did it in my car and it took me about 2 hours and its not too hard to do. Just tryin to save some time and cash :D

BTW, how many miles on that v6? Willing to sell it possilbly? If so let me know.

i meant the ls1's the fuel flow regulator built into the tank and they also use a higher volume but thanks for the advice ill have to look at that too when i start messing with the tank it seems to be cheaper and cheaper is always good :D , but if u mean my v6 is has 120,000 but like 80,000 are highway miles and it runs great but it would be pretty much everything that im selling if ur interested just let me know, cause i would have to sell it to do my new engine and everything

Find out how much shipping would be to 68048. It will probably be very expensive, but if its not too bad I might make you an offer. :)

ok ill check and ill let u know

bhpbo 06-10-2006 03:53 PM

after hearing all of that, i am no longer motivated to do this swap. I thought it would be a fun project to do with my grandpa, but it sounds like it will be more of a headache. I may consider doing the v8 swap to my s-10 pickup. thanks v6cam for the input!

blue89vert 06-10-2006 05:14 PM

i hear ya bro. If you were going from a V8 to a bigger V8 that would be a fun project more than a headache. Good luck with whatever you plan on doing.

i would love to get a 383 for my car, is it possible to do that (conversion metioned above) under 5k or would it be over with labor because no way in hell would i do it....and for you guys who own shops on here most of you are in no were around me so

2000v6cam 06-11-2006 01:43 AM

well i have everything planned on what i need to do to for my swap and so far i have the price up to like 11,000 and thats not including any labor or anything. But no problem bhpbo just wanted u to know what u were getting in to cause ive been planning this for a while and im probably just gonna try to get a loan to get most of what i need.

blue89vert 06-11-2006 02:00 AM

11 g's!!!!! if i had that kinda money i would spend like 4 on the engine and get a nice paint job for like 3 and a new top for about 700 and new trans and rear end for like 2 and than get a huuge system. I know you have good intentions and awesome plans but if your gonna spend that kinda money you should think about everything first

Are you buying the motor brand new? They sell on LS1tech.com and eBay for around $3500-$4500 with a tranny, computer wiring harness, etc. Other than that shop time is about $500 to pull the motor, $500 to reinstall and a gauge cluster is only about $75 for a used one. Stock exhaust can be picked up VERY cheap too. The only other thing is a K member and motor mounts and thats it.

I looked into this for my other Camaro 2 years ago and it was only going to cost me about $7500 labor included with all used parts. What else do you need? I am not disrespecting you at all, I am just very curious to why it will be $11,000.

lol yea its alot but its just so high because of the actual parts and im using and that is including the tranny and rear end and gears and suspension and pretty much everything that i am going to need for the whole job the only thing i didnt really add in was the wireing, so yea the 11 g's isnt just the engine its the engine, heads, tranny, suspension, and a long list of everything that i either need for the swap or just need or want to upgrade
trust me i have put alot of thought into this for a long while now
