water pump problem...

1994 3.4L 5 speed.
Okay my water pump has been squeeling like a stuck pig, time to replace it. However, tonight on the way home my car seemed like it was bogging down. Its shifts fine just seemed like it needed more power to move from a stop. There was a lot of vibration in the shifter when I left work but seemed to stop after it warmed up. My temp guage stayed at 210. when I stopped it did not get hot and when I was on the highway it didnt seem to cool. I have no idea what is wrong. No smoke from the exhaust and no leaks visible.
Any ideas?

can you hear your fan kicking on?

archemedes 11-30-2005 01:15 AM

if the bearing is seized it will take more power to turn the pump, the sueal was the bearing

NoRiceInside 11-30-2005 01:17 AM

arch is right. if the bearing is seized your putting a lot of drag on your crank. and that would cause your engine to stumble in accel.

RE: WP

Thanks guys... I do remember while on the highway at around 65-70 it began to smell. After I exited and slowed down the smell went away. I listened for the fan while I was driving or at a stop but could not hear it kick on.
Like I said, I seen no leaks and when I started it again in 2 hours there was no smoke. So I believe I did no damage to the engine.
Again, thank you for the replies. The pump will be replaced this weekend after I get back from my hunting trip.
PS: will it be easy to pull the pump off?

NoRiceInside 11-30-2005 12:04 PM

no. you need to a power steering pump pulley removal tool. one of the bolts for the pump is behind the pulley and you have to take it off. and just some advice, take the water pump pulley bolts off while the belt is still installed. it makes it so much easier.

RE:pump

Okay got back from hunting, car sat for 2 days. I started it and no problems. No squeek no rapid rise in temp. So I dont know, I'll hold off replacing it for now. I'll probably just replace it this weekend.

archemedes 12-04-2005 12:36 PM

hope it doesn't fail while driving, or you may end up replacing an engine too

Ride, what exactly do you mean by "stumble" you mean the engine will sort of "Loop" at times? Reason I ask is because I believe my waterpump is squealing alittle and its notht eh belt or belt tensioner and I believe I have a small..small water leak....Dunno where. Recap: What do you mean by stumble?

archemedes 12-04-2005 04:34 PM

feels like a slight miss

DDxHellRaiser 12-04-2005 04:38 PM

This miss/stumble/loop That I have usually happens when i slow down to stop at a light or something, then it will sort of..Loop..

archemedes 12-04-2005 06:19 PM

when slowing it's usually a too much fuel issue, or plugged idle control (normally but not always)you may also be getting the water pump slowing down all accessories, so the alternator can't keep up and you are too low on voltage(not real common, but possible)

RE: pump

Okay I'm not fully concerned its my WP. My power steering pump has some fluid showing on the bracket. Its not a lot just a condensation like thing behind the pulley wheel. Sorry I cant describe it better. Would this cause squeeking? My steering seems okay and is not hard to turn the wheels. My WP is not squeeking, the engine runs fine, and it does not over heat. I'm lost now. I'll replace both, cant hurt.

Yea my idle needle will move back and forth just a weeeebit...barely noticable...I just had a new EGr valve, New ignition Coils and new Ignition Modulator installed a few months ago, and new sparkplugs and wire. So what else do you think could be contributing to this loop issue I have?
Oh yea and My valve stem rings need to be replaced, that related to the problem?

pull teh belt and spin each pully, see if anything has a bind (tensioners squeak also)
