oh and his spelling is horrible but i figured it could just be because he claims to be in the UK

movistardave 11-14-2007 04:30 PM

ok, help me with this one... by friend put his car up forsale and got a reply from a guy saying he wants it and he's going to send an international money order in the mail for 28000$ + shipping for the car.

he doesnt say where he's from, his spelling is good but he does mention a few times about his client, i cant remember what they say excactly.

so he's just waiting for the cash in the mail. its fishy so could someone tell me what could go wrong here?

jimmy_on_20 11-14-2007 04:36 PM

check to see if it has any similar contact info to mine.
also tell your friend to sign up for the free trial version of point of mail... pointofmail.com :: advanced email experience and e mail the "buyer" from there... make sure the check if it shows up clears, the goal is usually for them to give you a cheque you deposit it, its put on hold and then they take your car.
if you question the seller for his name and a phone number he will respond with something like " it seems lik you are not ready to sell your car" or something like that.. tell your buddy to delay the car pick up time untill after the bank can 100% assure him that it is legit and they will insure the money if something happens.
once the ownership is signed he hands onver the keys he cant get it back and probably no way in tracking it....and the car will be shipped overseas

movistardave 11-14-2007 06:39 PM

i'll get some more info about it, but the plan right now is to wait for the $$ and get the bank to clear it

also the guy must be really dumb because the price of the car is $28000 or $470 a month lease take over and he replied back " i dont know what you mean by lease but im preparded to pay the full asking price of the car"

99civichatch 11-17-2007 01:47 AM

the hot thing nowadays seems to be email scams... when i was trying to sell my PS3 on kijiji maybe around 20-40% of all the replies i got were people from Africa and stuff asking if i can ship it while they send me some cheque.

It's a scam. Anything like that is a scam. Trust me. He'll offer up a ridiculous amount saying its for shipping and give it the cheque to his shipper and blah blah blah. I asked one of them for their shipper's contact and he refused. I asked for a reference and he refused. It's a scam dude. Sorry to say.

That sucks bigtime bro. I think once they have your info. they've got you. I might have an example of the cheque they send. Ouch..why wouldn;t the bank understand he got scammed and maybe try to recover some of the guys money?

I was selling for 9000 and this guy offers 18000...haha I'm like..dude I could get you cheaper shipping ya know. I ****in' owned him though. He said he lived in Calgary and had an office there. I said, what's the number? He says the office is closed for the time being. I said ok where exactly did you live? He tells me something like, majestic city of... I thought who the hell would say it like that so and he said he worked for a car place. So I google the majestic city of... or whatever...To my amazement the first link is the exact quote and is a website for the car company he said he worked for..haha..soo..I friggin call them up and ask if they know this guy. They obviously had noooo idea who he was. So then I told him **** off, get a ****in real job, ****in piece of ..ahaha..they deserve to be in lots of pain.

jonzey04 11-17-2007 08:52 PM

ya if i knew someone doin that i'd b like the roadrunner and ****KAAAPOWWW***** right in the face MOTHA SUCKA, then when hes on the ground, i'd drop a duece on his face, take a picture of it and post it in this thread, let that b a lesson to u scam artists out there

2TONE_93GT 11-17-2007 09:07 PM

My buddy got nailed with this scam, well, partially.

It was another Canadian from out west , same deal. The buyer said he understood the car was for sale for $8,000, for the troubles and having to load it onto a truck he would pay him $10,000.

So my buddy was like ok, send the money. He got a Int. Money order, deposited it and was about to get the car shipped over.
I was speaking with him and mentioned he should let it clear first, you never know.

A few days later, bank called. Fake money order. It was in US currency or something and when they did the exchange he ended up owing. They even froze his bank account. He ended up owing $300 to the bank. Brutal!

trini_mazda_fan 11-23-2007 02:25 AM

i noticed this scam on KIJIji.. I saw a 3rd gen RX7 twin turbo, lambo doors, the works....selling for $7k

I sent the guy and email asking to where he is so i can check out the car...he replied that he has the car with him in New York....he sez that he will ship the car for me....I need to send him a money order..i asked him if i can use paypal and he replies no...he doesn't like paypal...money order only...went back and forth for a few more e-mails as I'm thinking SCAM and trying to figure him out...FInally i sent him an E-mail saying that I'm comming to Queens for the weekend and wud bring him cash....never heard from him again...

I think once u send them your money order there is nothing u can do to get your money back...

jjm_240sx 05-04-2008 08:01 AM

i have been getting this a lot off kijiji. Also when you email some people for cars they are scams as well. they say the car is in Florida and they want to go though ebay. its a lot of BS!

DallasW 05-05-2008 12:28 AM

Craigslist and Kijiji are both getting pretty brutal for this, the ratio of scams just seems to be going up and up. If only people weren't dumb enough to fall for this...

psyfer 05-05-2008 01:38 PM

scam

I once came across a scam as well from kijiji.
This guy wanted only $8,000 for his 92 NSX. Once the dialog started, I found out he had no phone, shipping company phone was out of order and the only means of communication was email. :dunno:

Urgent: Please input: Wire transfer for used car scam

hi,

i posted my ad to sell car on craiglist and i got a response saying that he wants to buy the car, and send him the bank account number so that he can wire the money.

after 1 month, money is deposited in my account, bank confirmed but i am 100% sure that he is a scammer, as

1. he sent more money than asking price for shipment
2. guy claims to be in nigeria
3. a person who claims to be abank employee for my seller, keeps sending email from yahoo id
4. now they says that buyer does not want money and send the money back by western union.

5. they were rushing like anything. i got call from usa, india, nigeria numbers to pay asap otherwise it could be dangerous

6. i got e-mails from fake yahoo id's saying that person is from interpol and send the money asap

7. Its the 2nd day and money is still there in my account.

8. i asked to wait for 5 business days, and they agreed to that as well.

anybody came across this kind of scam?

i know its a scam, but how it works, and how to avoid this?

My bank is tracing the record.

I called OPP phone buster and registered the potential fraud case.

I need to pay his back the money, if it stays for 5 more days. but i know that its not their money.....

any inputs?

empire123 06-05-2008 11:40 AM

lol at least ur not getting scammed. you have the money. hang on to it. change ur pin and stuff around. dont give it back. F**K them. who cares. trust me, if it was interpol, you wouldve recievd something official. not random emails and fone callsfrom INDIA out of all the places. lol interpol duznt even operate there so ur gud. you have the money you keep it. buy urself something nice. let ur bank and the people who sent the cash worry about it. jus my 2 cents

jimmy_on_20 06-05-2008 05:08 PM

keep it dont send anything...its all yours...but make sure you dont loose the money by it being a scam

themaskeduser 06-10-2008 10:20 AM

Make a report to your local authorities, it's the old Nigerian scam. Keeping the money wouldn't be a good idea, police could charge you for taking part in the scam (I know it's retarded but it can happen.)

Check your bank your bank account activity. There's always the possibility that the money he sent you came from your bank account.

Damn scammers. The problem with western union wire transfers is that they're anonymous.

Best of luck to ya.

empire123 06-10-2008 10:30 AM

keep the cash. u get spooked then take it out and keep the cas. cops ask. u dont know. blame someone else. i mean its easy money 4u

v-tech 06-11-2008 12:07 AM

The rule of thumb is.... If it sounds too good to be true it most likely is!!

themaskeduser 06-11-2008 08:36 AM

I personally wouldn't keep it. Any transaction you make will be tracked whether you withdraw the money in person or online.

jimmy_on_20 06-11-2008 04:19 PM

talk 2 the bank, close your account and open a new one, tell them you are worried about someone hacking into your account and causing further issues.
if they wont help you tell them you are just going to switch to a competing bank as this is your money and their job is to protect it!!!! that is what they get paid for.
