Catalytic converter, can i just put any cat?

I just failed my etest.. the guy was stupid enough to run the car
with no cat and i was stupid enough to be convinced that rasonator
was actually my cat.

It's a 93 mazda b2200 and i failed doubling and trippling NoX and CO
i believe...

Can this be caused by a cat? and if i were to get a cat can i just
get a used one? any used one from junkyard? what's the lifespan on a cat like?
if anyone knows where to get a "lenient" etest lemme know? lol
i will probably go the legit way but hey if it fails even with a cat i don't know what to say.

if yer super duper cheap - you could go dumpster diving at muffler shops.

yes a cat could / would help to get those bad numbers, as would a non functioning EGR, as would improper air fuel mixture.

you can get a universal cat at a supply place, check the net for mail order, etc... for as low as 40bux, but usually around 65bux

yer lil pickup truck sure needs a lil help

rc3932 07-31-2007 06:29 PM

i heard they're supposed to never fail... so getting a used one wouldnt be too bad huh? and i called this parts store, said universal one for 65 bux but she said "it's the shorter one" n there are supposedly short and long one... does it matter which one i get?

thx for the input btw

Everything on a vehicle WILL fail, it's just a matter of time. With that truck, I think they switched to fuel injection, in 92, so you should be good, just replace the cat, EGR, PCV, plugs, airfilter, etc. Basic tune up, and it should pass just fine. :smilie_da

thx for the info, but one question still remains lol
can i just put any cat?

AMKK 07-31-2007 11:38 PM

No not any cat. Make sure the one that you put on is at least the same size as the factory, AND that it's not coming apart internally. Shake it, you shouldn't hear anything rattling. Look at it, there shouldn't be any pieces or chunks missing out of the honeycomb looking material. And for god sake, just get a new one.

Kuztom Freak 07-31-2007 11:46 PM

Im not sure if yer truck has an air pump or not. that would reallybe something to fig out cuz there r basically 2 cat styles - 1 with air pump fitting and 1 without. Otherwise its just size (height and length).

as said b4, tune up the truck, make sure it has all the emission devices on it and working. ask the shop yer gonna buy the cat from what size it needs to be, or call up midas or someone.

cats do over time get plugged up and fouled just like spark plugs do. A back fire can destroy a cat.

plus, why weld in a used cat that might go bad, the re and re of a replacement cat would cost more than a new cat would in labour and yer used cat. so 65+50 = 115. used cat + labour + new cat = 140 or so. so its cheaper just to go new.

why doesnt it have one now? just got it like that im guessing.

cutting out some pipe and welding in a new one should be around 50 bux, unless its in a tricky spot or the current exhaust is too fukked up (rotten)

cut the pipe right and you could install it yerself with good quality exhaust clamps (dont skimp on clams)

rc3932 08-01-2007 03:00 PM

ya i'm thinking of just doing up a whole new one starting at the down pipe.
flange, pipe, cat, resonator, muffler, cuz it's got leaks everywhere, i think the previous owner just cut out a cat cuz there's a connection weld for no reason which leaks pretty badly. The muffler's messed because i used to have a blown headgasket and i guess too much water got in it and damaged it.
thanks everyone for the input though, honestly ya i'd go with new one. I'm struggling keeping up with insurance and what not but i need it
because i'm trying to start my little decking/fencing/painting business.
thx again man i really appreciate your support

o another thing, can anyone suggest me a place? cuz i'm having some trouble
finding a place that has prices like that

Kuztom Freak 08-01-2007 03:28 PM

whats a price you like?

I could weld you up an exhaust - I just dont bend pipe (no pipe bender) but you can buy pre bent pipe for most vehicles

rc3932 08-01-2007 04:26 PM

Ya? hmmm i don't need any bent pipe.. cuz i just want everything replaced
from where downpipe ends. Its just straight, n cat, straight mayb my old rasonator straight then muffler

I'm getting prices like 100 bux for cat (just parts) and
60~70 bux for stock muffler (just part)

pm me ur contact info or something n we'll go from there
