Man, 21, clings to life after car slams into pole
By ROB LAMBERTI
A 21-year-old Toronto man is on life support in hospital after the car he was riding in crashed into a utility pole as the driver apparently attempted a "drifting" manoeuvre yesterday.
Det. Wally Watts of the Toronto Police traffic unit alleged alcohol and high speed once again played a potentially deadly combination leading to the Mitsuibshi Lancer crashing into the pole at Lawrence Ave. and Kennedy Rd. before 6 a.m.
PASSENGER HARDEST HIT
A backseat passenger, a 24-year-old Michigan man visiting family, suffered a broken jaw, while the driver broke an arm.
The passenger sitting up front took the brunt of the impact. The next 24 hours will be crucial in determining if he will survive, Watts said.
Witnesses told police the car was speeding south on Kennedy Rd. Watts said the driver tried to turn onto Lawrence Ave. using a racing technique known as drifting, in which the back end slides out while continuing to move forward.
'PLOWING IN STRAIGHT LINE'
"And it didn't work," Watts alleged. "He's just plowing in a straight line" into the pole.
Asantha Jayasinghe, 22, of Toronto, is charged with two counts each of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and impaired operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm and one count of driving with more than the legal limit of alcohol in his system.
He is to appear in Scarborough court today.

oh for ****s sake, just because his tires were squealing doesnt mean he was drifting. It sounds more like he locked up the brakes because he was drunk and understeered into a pole.
How the **** do you get drifting from that?
ZOMG TEH MEDIA SENSATIONALISM

This is just the Po-Po's way of starting the harrasment before Tokyo Drift comes out. It gives them a leg to stand on when they start to pull every car that resembles a rear wheel drive "drift machine".
