A divition of my work works with stainless steel.I considered going into welding myself.Half of the guys there never went to school. They learned from practice at home. All of them are tig welders.Theres a really good school in bridgenorth (near peterbrough) its right on the lake and has accomidations on site.

What kind of work does he enjoy, shop or field?

Shop: it would be best to know mig and tig, and possibly stick depending where your friend might end up finding employment.
Field: Stick and possibly mig.

Taking a course is just a way of getting your foot into the door showing that you are capable of welding decently. I was hired right into the field and it is a totally different environment than what I learned in class, it was a huge shock to me.

It might be a better idea to apply for a fab shop job, and work your way up, if you show dedication they will train you and pay for your certification, it is also a good way to see if you will like what you plan on doing.

Welding is hard on your lungs though, fumes (especially from ss), silica dust from grinding will take its toll on.
