The driver police pursued in a chase in Chesterfield Twp. was not alone - police say his girlfriend and two young kids were in the car as he sped down Gratiot.

Chesterfield Twp. Police were first called out to a shopping center near 21 Mile and Gratiot because a store clerk told them a man was trying to pull a scam. That man took off running, but police say they were able to spot the getaway car.

Police followed the white Seabring down Gratiot over 7 miles. In that time, the Seabring slid between cars to avoid stopping at red lights, struck vehicles, and jumped curbs trying to get away.

The chase continued at 70 miles an hour down the center lane of Gratiot. Police even set a trap for the car, but the Seabring got around it.

According to Det. Jim Gates, that’s when the Seabring starting losing engine oil. The car eventually quit, but not before a wild ride into a neighborhood, and not before taking out a police car with it

The one-year-old and 3-year-old children inside that car were not hurt over the course of the chase. The driver of the Seabring was arrested, and police continued to look Tuesday for the man accused of scamming the clerk in the first place.
