How to add GD support

Ok guys after tons of research I found out why the gallery and member garage aren't working correctly. Our host recompiled php and didn't add GD support. Is there anyway for me to add GD support myself or do I have to go through the host? If I do go through the host is there a chance we'll lose the database and everything we have here?
Thanks

Now I need to find someone that really know's what they are doing so I can just pay them to do it.

No matter how small of a project I do I always back it up but it takes a good long time to do because there's so much to it. Plus when I'm messing with the PHP code I'm afraid I'll change something that won't let me bring it back up to normall operating mode.
When we switched from phpBB to VBulletin I backup the database and tried to bring it to the VBulletin software but the only thing that came over were people's PM's. Non of the posts came over like they were suppost to, I'd hate to start all over again.

Go to platinummanagementservices.com and pay for their services. It's only $29 a month no matter how many tickets you open. I had them recompile my PHP with IMAP support, so I know they can do GD support. You have a dedicated server, right? I think PSM would work for you, I love them. $29 is a small price to pay because they totally hardened and secured my site's server.
