How Will New SUV Rebate/Tax Affect Your Next Car Buy?
If you're thinking of buying a new car, what happened in Ottawa Monday is bound to make you hit the brakes - at least temporarily. When the federal government brought down its budget, it also brought down something else - the roof on car dealers who sell what's commonly referred to as gas guzzlers. Under the new rules, big fuel wasters like Hummers (top left) and some SUVs will have a tax imposed on them of up to $4,000. But choose a car that's good on gas and you could save as much as $2,000. The edict went into effect on Tuesday, which didn't give either car buyers or dealers much time to adjust. And it's already having an effect on David Wismer, who purchased his new Dodge Durango less than 24 hours after Finance Minister Jim Flaherty's announcement. He missed the rebate altogether and wished he'd known it was coming. "I think down the road, I think it could certainly make us re-think our choices," he muses. The rules are bringing some smiles from environmentalists, but those who depend on the automotive industry worry they'll be running out of gas. "Sales are going to slow right down on this, there's no question about it," admits Marcel Stirpe of Toronto-Chrysler GM. "We hope we'll make it up with the smaller cars." Premier Dalton McGuinty likes the plan - with reservations. "I'm confident we can work with the industry to make sure this does not compromise their profitability," he maintains. So which cars are eligible for the big payback? overall though, the rebate thing is a good way to get people to get eco/hybrid cars :thumbsup: |

Present ride is a 95 G Cherokee 4x4 . Next one will be a 02 or newer G cherokee. Or a 02 or newer dodge 4x4 4 door pick up . I need 4x4 so my old lady can be safe doing night shift work in the winter , 4 doors so her an her little hottie friends can go out in the winter . And i need to be able to haul a 3500 lb car on a trailer to TMP/Cayuga ..77.

Pickup trucks are exempt from the gas guzzler tax, so I can see some current SUV owners moving to optioned-up 4-door crewcab pickup trucks when it's time to buy again.

Now honestly, who the hell needs an H2, or H3 to commute? That's the issue right there. They want people to stop driving big vehicles on the 401, with one passenger. I say go ahead and tax bigger vehicles. It'll make people think twice before buying one.

I want to know who the hell thinks that a Monte Carlo/Impala is a Fuel conscious buy.
All of the other cars are 1.3-1.9L engines or Hybrid, and then you get the 3.5L of the Monte Carlo and the Impala? That doesn't make sense at all. Where are the 1.9L Lancers? or the 1.6L Scion's? Just another attention Grab by the Government to make us believe that they are trying to do what is best for the country. as drift said, if you can afford a 70K+ car, an extra 4K is peanuts, so what difference does it make. I say screw the $4,000 Tax, charge them an extra $0.25 Cents at the pump per liter, and then see how many people rush out to start buying hummers, and the like. |

I got no problems with this tax, I've always hated SUVs and trucks which are not being used for their intended purposes. Tax these hummer owning bastards. However I have a bad feeling this tax will to cover sports cars cause those big powerful motors suck a decent amount of gas to.

To have any effect on buying habits, fuel porice increases would have to be crippling across the board. A 25 cent per liter increase is more annoying than crippling. You would have to double and maybe even triple fuel prices overnight to induce any lasting change in people's choices. And even then, the rich folks who drive $70,000+ vehicles are going to be only minimally affected. |
the prius is worse for the environment than any suv, but you get a rebate! brilliant!!!
