job offer

well its gonna seem like i change jobs almost as much as i change cars...but i got an offer.

its from where i worked before big o tires. "the shop in quartz hill". one of the techs there, pat, called me today outta the blue, said the owners both sold it. one owner was the master tech, the other was simply the guy who ran things. so now pat is in charge of the shop, and the service writer, tim, is pretty much running the business aspect.

it was quite a surprising change, but pat asked if i wanted to come back. before when i was there i mostly cleaned and all that, but i got a good deal of brakes/oil changes/etc to do.

now that im working at big o i've learned to do a lot more. alignments, shocks/struts, good variety of brakes, axles, etc. they know that at the shop and want me there to do that, plus some occational cleaning.

at big o i make 7.50 an hour, with about 300 take home per week with a 5 day week. do quite a bit of work but hate the owner and hate working for a franchise with so many stupid rules.

my new offer is commission at 12 per hour with 5 1/2 days a week. i'd get to do the same work and possibly make more money per week, yet possibly very little money.

so...what to do. i loved working at the shop, but now its only about money.

i would go back, with me it would probably be worth the risk if i got to work at a shop that i really liked with a boss that i really liked

I understand going back but I feel you should be loyal to your company and not keep jumping around. Personally I don't hire people who can't hold a job for over a year as an average.

I agree with Chad completely, plus when it comes to commision work, it can be very unstable. You could be doing great for a while, then all the sudden it get's real slow and there's just not enough work to keep you busy, so it's either stick it out for a while with little or no funds, or leave find something more consistant like where you're at. (unfortunately for me I never had it work out in my favor when I worked commision jobs)

I'm definitely not suggesting that you stay where you're at and work for those wages very long, but I think I'd find something full time somewhere else that pays you what you're worth. JMO ;)

Im in kind of the same predicament as you... Right now im making 8.25 at the TJ Lounge, which in all honesty, is not bad for fast food. I can probably work full time this summer if I want to, I really like my manager (shes a chick, and im on her good side...I have mad brownie pts with her) and shes really flexible about my schedule... I can take whenever/however long I want off prettymuch.

Then B-rod (mxracerbrian) told me I can work with him at a deisel shop this summer if I want (im still deciding right now)... I would probably make 9-10 an hour, and work full time, plus I would get to learn about somthing Im actually interested in..

So I feel you man, its a hard decision.

i think chad and arch are right. i dont wanna keep jumping around. and i told myself that i was going to really pay attention to work today. it was slow, but it was easy and i had fun. and i made money even though it was slow.

i'd also be cleaning for free. if its all on commission why the hell would i clean? they'd need to pay me at least a base sallary plus commission, which they arent willing to do.

i guess i just need to talk to my boss cuz another tech makes $10 a hour, he has more experience, but i do the same stuff he does so im worth more than $7.50.

If they cant get you a base salary that is atleast equal to what you have now I would just stay where you are at now. Better safe than sorry.
