MARQUETTE — Two Baraga County men were injured, with one still hospitalized this morning, following a high-speed car chase and crash in Marquette early this morning.

The name of the driver, a 22-year-old L’Anse man, isn’t being released pending authorization of charges by the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office and arraignment in 96th District Court. He was not injured.

The driver was arrested for fleeing and eluding an officer, felonious driving, and driving with a suspended license, according to Detective Capt. Mike Angeli of the Marquette Police Department.

Second-degree fleeing and eluding, when the offense ends with a significant injury, is a felony carrying a maximum 10-year prison sentence, while felonious driving carries a two-year sentence, according to the state of Michigan Web site.

The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. at 401 N. Front St. near the intersection of Arch Street, Angeli said. The car, a 2005 Pontiac GTO, struck a wrought-iron fence in the yard and sustained significant damage.

Back-seat passenger Matthew Friisvall, 21, of Baraga sustained a severe laceration to his neck and was transported to Marquette General Hospital, where he was reported in fair condition by a hospital spokeswoman this morning.

Friisvall was also arrested on three outstanding warrants, police said.

Front-seat passenger Nathaniel Foy, 27, of L’Anse, who owns the car, had to be extricated with the Jaws of Life and was later treated and released from MGH, police said.

The driver was spotted traveling northbound at 72 mph in a 55 mph zone on U.S. 41 just south of Shiras Hill near the Nordic Bay Lodge, according to Detective Capt. Mike Angeli of the Marquette Police Department.

When police lights and sirens were activated, the driver sped up and continued north into the city on U.S. 41 and was estimated to exceed 100 mph on South Front Street near the east end of the U.S. 41 bypass, police said.

Just before the crash, the driver lost control of the car and nearly struck a vehicle, Angeli said.

Assisting at the scene were the Marquette Fire Department, MGH EMS, MediRide Ambulance, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department and Northern Michigan University Public Safety.
