Looking at getting an HDTV..

So i've been researching an affordable decent size HDTV with 1080p. Im pretty much only going to use it for DVD's and Xbox games, I have the Xbox Elite, and I know it wont play anything but up to 1080i, but thats fine.

I've been looking at this model, because for $996, its a deal. And the reviews on all the websites i've looked at have been great, just some small complaints about ghosting and some other factors. Tell me whatcha think. Arch please chime in here ;)

if it ever needs service your screwed, they are a store brand only (as in you can't buy a universal remote for it and only 1 place can do anything with it) chances are it's a cheap chinese one do yourself a favor and go with a Sharp (make theirs, and any lcd that says Sony) or Philips (they make them for a few companies most notably LG) especially if you want to play games, the refresh rate on that set could be measured in minutes compared to decent sets (that's what causes ghosting) how big is your room? If your over 6 feet from a 42" set don't worry about the 1080 stuff, your eyes can't see it at that distance. Also don't fall for the hz crap, the new sets have made people sick

Its a rather small apartment, so im only about 5 feet from the tv. But Arch, can you recommend anything with that size, reso, and refesh rate for that kind of price?

Im getting a 47 inch LCD TV, We currently have a 55 inch HDTV Projector Screen, but the lighting in it has gone bad, so all the pictures are dark, my dad and I are going to pick it up today infact. My big ass 55inch tv will be missed!

look at Samsung they have one that suggested retail is $1400 so with a little looking it should be had for around a grand.
OLEVIA has a 37" that retails for $900 and they always have good reviews. Best buy and Circuit City will tend to have slightly higher prices than a smaller store most of the time ( I have yet to have Best Buy be lower than my regular price on any current item)

I wouldn't cheap out, you'll regret it latter. I did a ton of research before I bought my 42" LCD TV and when it all came down this is the one I bought - http://news.tigerdirect.com/2007/09/...ed-i-say-more/

I couldn't be happier with the purchase, the TV looks simply amazing even compared to my brother's LCD TV's and my dad's 55" HDTV.

the LG isn't a bad set (that's what my computer monitor is)

I personally thought that JVC had a nice quality picture for a 47" LCD 1080p compared to other brands, we couldnt make a desicion based on what we saw today price wise, we wanted that size for about $1000, but the best we could find for a good quality 47" was 1500$ to 1700$, which I think will be the case and all of that, what im getting at is dont buy something unless your ready or know about it first, so we are being carefull about what we buy so we make sure it suits our needs. Keep researching them and dont rush into buying one.

I would get a better brand. I just dont trust best buys brands... Even tho they look like a good deal, Id go with a samsung... Those look amazing.

best buy is such a ripp off, it was a 500$ difference at costco for the same TV... hella weak sauce...

But, Best Buy offers a 4 year free replacement warranty. Im wondering if that covers the TV even if its discontinued...

It's a lot better than just not bad.

I don't trust Best Buy at all! I bought a TV from them years ago and it stopped working within a couple months. I took it back and they refused to help out at all, no replacment, no refund, no nothing. I don't trust Best Buy at all, plus they are the company that made BestBuy.com a seperate company so they could advertise a lower price online and when you went to the store to buy it they wouldn't honor the online price since "it's a seperate company". Luckly lawsuits were brought against them for that.

I can get the same warranty they offer, almost any retailer has access to it, they don't care about the brand of the set just the price

they also got busted by the manufacturers for MAP violations (any big name brand that you see a click for price is not an authorized sale, and has no factory warranty by the way)
