Question about reg & lic of 77 Camaro in NYS
 

Well, this seems to be the place where everybody hangs out so the new guy has a question. I just purchased a 1977 Camaro and will need to register it. During a conversation with another owner, he suggested that I register it as an anitque which he says exempts me from inspections and all the nasty stuf that new car owners have to go through today. It also came up that the registration itself would be cheaper and the insurance more reasonable.

So now I throw it out to you. Please tell me about your experience with this process and who to turn to for insurance. I appologize if this has been discussed before, and really do appreciate your indulgance! :D

BTW, yes, I am going to put the savings back into the car! :)

not sure of new yourk laws, but MI if you register as antique you only get so many miles a year you can drive, some states it can only be driven certain days, and never to work.May want to check limitations with the dmv first if there isn't much then go for it

looks like if you do it don't get caught daily driving it, also the insurance may kill the savings (sometimes it's less)

I know after 20 years you can register it as classic and save on insurance that way. I know a way that some people save money with muscle cars that are daily driven is to buy an old title from a junkyard and use that as their 'daily driver' to lower the insurance premium. But that works only if your company doesn't require pictures to insure the vehicle. You didn't hear all this from me though......

yeah, usually when they are registered that way there is a mileage limit.

Is a historical registration different from a standard registration?
Yes. You cannot use a historical vehicle for daily transportation. An automobile collector normally registers a historical vehicle or a vintage vehicle to use it for exhibits, club activities, tours, and parades.

That's all NYS has to say about it on their web site. I doubt that any State Trooper could give me the answers over the phone if I called, but should have plenty of answers when I get pulled over! :D
