radar detector useless if not mounted on windshield?
 

I know it's illegal to use on the road and stuff. I was just wondering if they'd be completely useless if I don't mount them on windshield; whereas, I mount it lower in the center console. Would that be just a performance loss, or it wouldn't detect anything.

If you're trying to avoid being caught with one, the best place to mount it is in your trunk.

Unclip the cover of your third brake light and put it in there.
