Coming up with enough cash to adequately fund public transit is an ever-present issue in the GTA, but a new study suggests digging into motorists' pockets for some of that money.

Road tolls and a gas levy are two suggestions being floated by the Trent University paper, written by professor Harry Kitchen, as a way to come up with more money to fund both highways and public transit systems.

Released Monday, the study proposes drivers pay to use the 400-series highways in the GTA and Hamilton along with the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), Don Valley Parkway (DVP) and Gardiner Expressway.

According to Kitchen a seven-cents-per-kilometre toll would bring in $700 million per year. Drivers could be billed by mail, he contends.

The study also calls for a fuel tax of six cents per litre to bring in an additional $420 million annually. The goal is to ease gridlock and improve public transit without increasing property taxes.

The Residential and Civil Construction Alliance of Ontario, which commissioned the study, will be meeting with Transportation Minister Jim Bradley on Wednesday to talk about its findings.

hey you guys member years and years ago when gas jumped 20 cents a liter, it was to pay off a debt the canadian gov had, guess what, that debts been paid for years and yet we still pay the extra cost of gas. how about evreyone gets a gas card and based on your income you pay that for gas. charge the rich bastards more. or wait, heres an even better idea, take away the gas cards the gov cocksuckers have, they get rfee gas so what do they care if the cost goes up, theyre not paying for it. make them pay for their own gas and see how quickly it drops

yeah i heard about that crap and meanwhile a measly 2 percent comes off taxes in stores who the f**K cares n e way i was fine at 15 percent or even 1 more woulda been fine not 6 cents on the ltr it affects us so much more why do drivers have to pay for public transit?? everyone should pay and not on gas ive seen it go up too too much and i wanna start smashing gas stations or slicing the hoses so it leaks everywhere as a protest its gotta stop too much on the gas. if it goes through im buying a bycicle ad taking 401 on it

Why would I want to pay for someone else's public transportation? Thats why I have a f'n car so I dont have to pay for public transportation..Obviously this fukker makes enough money at Trent U. so he's not worried about gas..

I heard Toronto got like millions for the TTC but they used that money to upgrade the appearance of about 7 TTC stations, only cosmetic shite, nothing to actually improve the functions or get more buses n shite.

Toronto now hands out bogus parking fines to LEGALLY parked cars (I've got 4 in less than a yr, otherwise I havnt got a single one in 15 yrs in Toronto), has that BS entertainment tax, etc... now add road tolls and you can guaranfukkentee that no one will spend money cuz it'll all go to this BS, this means merchants suffer, maybe go out of business, workers get laid off, more unemployed ppl, less money, more welfare cases, more crime, etc...
