Roaming Thief Accidentally Locks Himself In Jail

It happened Saturday night when some idiot decided it would be a good idea to break into a deserted police station in the town of Matamata. He made a tour of the place before heading to the cell block, where he evidently decided to try out the accommodations. The next thing our hero knew, the self locking door did just that, leaving him unable to escape.
While all this was going on, police were rushing to the outpost, alerted by a silent alarm. And that's when our dumb crook proved that maybe he wasn't so dumb in an emergency. He took a wooden chair that had been left in the enclosure, swung it as hard as he could and smashed a window. Cops arrived just in time to hear the tell tale sounds of glass breaking, but as they rushed in the back, the intruder was scampering out the front. He was gone by the time officers reached the entrance.
"It was quite unusual," admits Sgt. Graham McGurk. "The offender has almost done the job for us, getting himself locked in our cell." It's still not clear why the guy broke into the jail and nothing was taken.
But we have to end this story with one other observation about something equally dumb. How did a prisoner - accidental or otherwise - manage to break a window in jail and get out? The glass in the cell was supposed to be "shatter-proof". Seems like the crook's not the only dumb one in this tale of hide and go seek.
